I watched The Super Mario Bros. Movie

It was the best movie, making me feel as if I were playing the game.

I had originally planned to go see the movie yesterday, but due to various reasons, I changed it and went today.
The movie I watched, as the title suggests, is The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
I was looking forward to it because Chris Pratt, known for Guardians of the Galaxy, was doing the voice of Mario.
However, there were few screenings of the subtitled version, and it didn't look like I could go at a convenient time, so I decided to go see only the dubbed version this time.
It just so happened that my family was going too, so I matched my schedule with theirs and went.

The Mario games I have played properly are only Super Mario 64 and New Super Mario Bros. on the Nintendo DS.
Other than that, there's Paper Mario and the Mario Party series on the Nintendo 64.
I also played a few Mario Kart games.
It's a Mario I know, but haven't played much.
But I had been looking forward to it since I heard it was being made into a movie.

It was incredibly fun.
I had watched the trailer many times, but seeing Mario actually move and take action was truly wonderful.

Watching it dubbed this time was also quite good.
The person who voiced Mario was Mamoru Miyano.
Personally, he is a voice actor with a very strong character, known for Riku in KINGDOM HEARTS.
However, during the main story, he was just Mario.
He was undoubtedly Mario.

The setting where Mario and Luigi ran a plumbing business in New York was also good.
They became characters with real blood in their veins as Italian immigrants, and I felt that having those daily life parts made the adventure in the Mushroom Kingdom, an otherworldly place, even more colorful.
I thought it was a faithful movie adaptation while re-placing the Mario worldview into the modern day.

The pipe travel scene, which was also in the trailer, was just like the original, and the Mario Maker-style athletic scenes and the Mario Kart Rainbow Road scene were the best.
It was great that the scenes I had actually played in the game appeared as a movie.
Especially the Mario Kart scene had a truly wonderful level of reproduction of the original.
While watching the movie, I felt as if I were playing the game.

And above all, I was able to enjoy watching the movie from beginning to end.
Since it is an animated movie, it had an atmosphere aimed at children, and there were indeed many children who came to watch it.
But I felt that adults were enjoying it just as much.
It was the best movie that both children and adults could enjoy.
The only disappointing thing was that a large amount of popcorn was dropped when leaving the screen.
I think if they are going to drop or leave that much, they shouldn't buy it.

The movie itself is short at 94 minutes, but it was quite dense.

I would like to summarize my impressions, including spoilers for the main story such as the small details depicted in the film, in a bulleted list.

• The daily life part in New York was very good. It was great how they delved into the conflicts with his family, the rivalry with fellow tradesmen, his attitude toward his work as a plumber, and above all, the relationship between Mario and Luigi.

• I wonder if the bearded man who spoke first after the commercial is the original voice actor for Mario. I couldn't tell because it wasn't in English, but from the atmosphere of the depiction, I felt like that was the case.

• I was moved by the attention to detail in the animation of various things, such as the texture of the mushrooms and the fluffiness of the penguins.

• It was also nice that Baby Mario and Baby Luigi appeared in the flashback scene. When I checked the official website, I learned that they were twins.

• The depth of Bowser's army was amazing. Familiar enemy characters like Koopa Troopas, Paratroopas, Goombas, and Bob-ombs were all there. And in particular, the Dry Bones and Shy Guys were scary and wonderful.

• Yoshi was shown before they went to the Jungle Kingdom.

• The DK Rap was the best, and it was great that Diddy was there and the stage felt like the arcade Donkey Kong.

• It was truly the best that so many 80s pop songs were played. 'Holding Out For a Hero', 'Take On Me', 'Thunderstruck', and 'Mr. Blue Sky' all fit the visuals perfectly, and it was the best of the best.

• The score was by Brian Tyler. The arrangements of the game music were good, and the new tracks were also quite good.

• Bowser's song. That really sticks in your ears.

• Many Toads are aware that they are cute.

• The aggressive Princess Peach who fights was very good.

• Both Cat Mario and Tanooki Mario were wonderful.

• What I personally found exciting was Mario Kart. Customizing the karts themselves and racing on Rainbow Road was just like the game. It was also the best that the karts went into anti-gravity mode and gliders appeared, just like in recent Mario Kart games.

• The action scene between Mario and Donkey Kong in the final act was also intense. The way they both kept pushing forward really felt like a 2P co-op session.

• The final battle. I almost teared up seeing Mario and Luigi go invincible after grabbing the Star. The music at that moment was an arrangement of the Star theme. It was a very detailed recreation of the original game, with them scattering enemies while in the Star state and even grabbing Bowser by the tail to throw him. I also almost cried when Mario was finally acknowledged by his father in this scene.

• It was great that the end credits featured the Japanese dub voice actors. The music during the staff roll was also fantastic.

• Bonus scenes. The first was a revival of Bowser's song. The second was Yoshi hatching in the sewers of New York. The children in the theater were buzzing when they heard Yoshi's familiar voice.

Knowing that, I had no hesitation about watching the dub, and it was definitely the right choice to watch it that way.

I went to see the movie today, and my Nintendo Switch arrived while I was out.
