Is Finance Just Cold Numbers, or Is It a Language to Protect People?
― Thinking about the Foundation of Management Ability from the White Paper on Small Enterprises ① ―
Last time, I wrote that
dialogue is the foundation as a necessary management literacy for small business operators.https://note.com/witty_worm1155/n/n04aa3d225e73
This time, I would like to think about
financial and accounting literacy among those.
The 2026 White Paper on Small Enterprises defines
financial and accounting literacy mainly as
・Cost management
・Cash flow planning
and so on.
In addition, it is stated that small business operators often do not have sufficient financial leeway,
and that management decisions based on
understanding profitability and cash flow are important.
This is a very important perspective as a basis for management.
However, when facing the reality on the ground,
I feel that it is necessary to take it one step further.
Finance is "something to protect people"
From the perspective of management that values people,
finance is not just numbers.
・Can we pay employee salaries?
・Can they continue to work with peace of mind?
・Can we maintain trust with business partners?
Finance is what supports these "promises to people."
In other words,
I believe finance is the "foundation for protecting people."
The smaller the company, the more it stays in the manager's head
The White Paper also states that the smaller the scale,
the more likely it is that the manager themselves handles the accounting.
I feel that this is exactly the case in the field as well.
・The numbers are in the head.
・But they are not put into words.
・They are not shared with employees.
In this state,
finance remains a "personal intuition".
Numbers only move when there is "dialogue"
No matter how much you grasp the numbers,
if they are not shared,
・The field cannot make decisions
・Prices cannot be maintained
・Unreasonable work is accepted
these things happen.
That is why,
I believe finance only gains power through dialogue.
What does 'dialogue' mean for a one-person business?
There is one important premise here.
Among small businesses, there are many 'one-person businesses'
that have no employees.
In fact, among small businesses,
sole proprietorships account for a large proportion,
and there are many cases where dialogue with employees cannot be assumed.
So, is dialogue unnecessary?
I do not think so.
The partner in dialogue is not limited to 'within the company'
For a one-person business, the partners in dialogue are:
・Family
・Financial experts such as tax accountants
・Small and Medium Enterprise Management Consultants
・Support organizations such as Chambers of Commerce and financial institutions
・Acquaintance business owners and networking group members, etc.
Thesetrusted external entities for dialogue.
Rather,
dialogue as a mechanism to avoid carrying everything alone
becomes important.
By putting things into words, management is organized
When thinking alone,
・Vague anxiety
・Vague sense that things are okay
you tend to make decisions based on these feelings.
However, when you try to talk to someone,
・Trying to put it into words
・Trying to organize the numbers
this process is born.
This is exactly what
the essence of financial and accounting literacy
is, I feel.
What is a small but strong and kind company?
A strong company is one that makes a profit.
A kind company is one where people are protected.
These two are not separate things;
they are connected by finance.
・Do not offer unreasonable discounts
・Do not accept unreasonable orders
・Do not engage in unreasonable work practices
These judgments
all stem from an understanding of finance.
So, where to start?
There is no need to start with difficult things.
For example,
・Try putting this month's sales and expenses into words
・Try thinking about cash flow in terms of "how long it will last"
・Try talking about the numbers with someone you trust
These small steps lead to
"turning numbers into human language."
Summary
Finance is not something cold.
It is
"a promise to keep this company going."
And that promise becomes the foundation for management that values people.
Do you have
an opportunity to talk about your company's numbers with someone?
Is it someone within the company?
Or is it someone outside the company?
