AI Performance Theory: Orchestral Sound in Suno (Part2)— Methods Beyond Scale and Spatial Design English translation of #44 for Non-Japanese readers

This significantly increases the likelihood that the harp will take a leading role in the music.

Using “featuring ~”
For example:

“Featuring flute and strings”

This raises the probability that flute and strings will be prominently highlighted.

Using “double ~”
For example:

“Double harps”

This creates the effect of having two harps. You may also specify numbers directly.

Using “additional ~”
For example:

“Additional brass ensemble”

This often results in a denser brass texture, as if extra brass instruments had been added.

2. Changing Tone Color

Strings (excluding special techniques)

  • Warm soft strings
    Produces a warm, gentle resonance.

  • Silky strings
    Suggests smooth, refined tone.

  • Velvet strings
    Similar to “silky,” but particularly effective when aiming for beautifully shaped melodic lines.

  • Singing strings
    Encourages lyrical phrasing.

  • Layered strings
    Creates a rich, layered texture.
    When combined with “chords played by long notes,” sustained string harmonies are more likely to appear.
    This is particularly useful when you want to maintain orchestral continuity and create symphonic cohesion between sections.

  • Lush strings
    Expressive and full-bodied. I frequently use this when I want strings to carry the melody prominently.

  • Aerial strings
    Suggests floating, spatial resonance. Effective in high registers to evoke skies or outer space.

  • Romantic strings
    Suitable for emotionally dense passages, especially slow movements in Romantic-style works.

  • Cinematic strings
    Wide and expansive; ideal for scenic or landscape-like passages.

The possibilities are nearly infinite.

A Practical Concern

Some readers may wonder:
In Suno, you cannot control exactly when or how instruments appear. If everything is fixed after generation, how can we meaningfully shape expression?

Even simple descriptors like those above already have noticeable effects. However, if you want stronger results, you can combine them structurally:

“Music is driven by silky strings”
“Featuring warm velvet strings”

Such phrasing significantly increases the probability that these tonal qualities will appear (though never with 100% certainty).

Woodwinds

  • Light woodwinds

  • Soft woodwinds

  • Sharp woodwinds

  • Brilliant woodwinds

  • Breathy flute
    Particularly effective for characteristic solo passages.
    Since jazz flute tone contains more breath component than classical flute, this works well in jazz-influenced contexts.

  • Bird-chirping-like flute

  • Dark oboe

Brass

  • Roaring brass
    A staple in symphonic climaxes.

This effect is one of the defining attractions of orchestral music. Representative examples include:

  • Ludwig van Beethoven: Symphony No. 5, Symphony No. 9 (Finale)

  • Gustav Mahler: Symphony No. 1, Symphony No. 2 (Finale)

  • Anton Bruckner: Symphonies No. 7–9 (Finales)

  • Jean Sibelius: Symphony No. 2 (Finale)

  • Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky: 1812 Overture, Symphonies No. 4 & 5

  • Igor Stravinsky: The Firebird, The Rite of Spring

These are only a few examples among countless others.

However, based on my experience, this specification does not suit Baroque or Classical-style music (e.g., Bach or Mozart). Orchestral forces were smaller, and brass and percussion were not used with such overwhelming intensity. This approach is best reserved for late-Romantic or later styles.

Other useful phrases:

  • Warm brass choir

  • Heroic brass fanfare

Percussion and Others

  • Thunderous timpanies
    Particularly effective when combined with “roaring brass.”

  • Subtle rhythm of percussion

  • Crystalline harp (or piano)
    Produces a transparent, sharply defined tone. I use this extremely often.

The vocabulary for modifying tone color is virtually limitless. Many of the expressions above are ones I have tested successfully, but countless others remain unexplored. This area is highly experimental—results must be discovered through trial.

3. Special Techniques

Most special techniques apply to strings. I discuss these in detail elsewhere, so here I will only list major examples:

  • Divisi

  • Pizzicato

  • Sul tasto

  • Sul ponticello

  • Detaché / Legato switching

  • Tremolo

  • Spiccato

  • Harmonics

  • Con sordino (mute)

  • Col legno

  • Bartók pizzicato

  • Glissando

Among these, particularly noticeable effects include divisi, pizzicato, sul tasto, sul ponticello, articulatory switching, tremolo, and harmonics.

Woodwinds:

  • Harmonics

  • Flutter-tonguing

Brass:

  • Mute

  • Flutter-tonguing

In my personal experience, special techniques for woodwinds and brass are rarely essential.

4. Modifying Musical Language Itself

When you specify only one style, the model tends to produce a “typical” version of that style.

If you wish to avoid strong stylistic convergence and instead create a more personal sound, mixing multiple references is highly effective.

For example:
neoclassicism

This is broad. It merely indicates “20th-century music influenced by Baroque or Classical style,” without specifying which composer.

Instead, try:

neoclassicism, baroque, Stravinsky, Bach

This narrows the stylistic direction.

Stravinsky’s Pulcinella, for instance, draws on Giovanni Battista Pergolesi and Italian Baroque models.

Example Prompt (Partial)

  • Igor Stravinsky

  • Inspired by “Pulcinella”

  • Giovanni Battista Pergolesi

  • Neoclassicism

Another example is Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana.

Orff is often classified under Primitivism.
Carmina Burana sets medieval texts and employs modal language with strong rhythmic drive.

Thus:

primitivism, medieval, Carl Orff

However, specifying only these terms is not sufficient. You would also need:

  • Solo and choral specifications

  • Text preparation

  • Clarification of which movement’s atmosphere you aim to evoke

Multiple references help prevent convergence toward a single style and allow exploration of hybrid sound worlds.

More Experimental Combinations

For instance:

neoromanticism, baroque, British style

This may generate a hybrid combining Romantic expressiveness, Baroque clarity of harmonic motion, and a certain noble British character.

However, there is an important caution:

Adding references increases the risk of unintended associations.

For example:

  • “Baroque” strongly activates associations such as Bach, counterpoint, and certain instrumentation.

  • “British style” may unexpectedly activate rock-related contexts.

The model interprets language internally at great speed, activating multiple associations simultaneously.

Another combination:

impressionism, renaissance, cinematic

Impressionism already contains pictorial qualities. Combined with cinematic scoring and Renaissance polyphony, it may yield gently modal, flowing textures.

The combinations are virtually infinite.

On Originality
Many creators avoid specifying composers entirely. This is a valid method and can help avoid strong stylistic imitation.

However, this does not automatically guarantee originality.

Even without explicit references, the model may generate music based on internal preset mixtures of various styles and historical languages.

In that sense, achieving pure originality is inherently challenging.
