No.13 一期一会は、東京からインドへ
先日、東京でひとりのインド人男性と出会った。
彼はインドでシーメンスに勤務しているという。
英語が得意かと聞かれれば、正直、自信はない。
長崎で生まれ育った私の英語は、いまだに中学英語と身振り手振りのハイブリッド仕様である。
それでも不思議なことに、笑顔は通じる。
「Where are you from?」
たったそれだけの会話から、話は広がっていった。
日本には「一期一会」という言葉がある。
茶道の世界から生まれた言葉で、「この出会いは一生に一度かもしれない。だから大切にしよう」という意味だ。
考えてみれば人生そのものが一期一会なのかもしれない。
高校ラグビーで泥だらけになった仲間との出会いも。
英国へラグビー留学した時に出会った友人たちも。
そして今回、東京の空の下で出会ったインドの友人も。
もしあの日、「英語が苦手だから」と話しかけなかったら、この写真も、この思い出も存在しなかった。
私は52歳になった。
しかし最近になって思う。
人生で最も危険なのは失敗することではない。
「どうせ無理だ」と決めつけて、人との出会いをあきらめることだ。
ちなみに私はインドについて、カレーとクリケットとボリウッド映画くらいしか知らない。
だが、今回の出会いをきっかけに、インド映画やインド音楽をもっと知りたくなった。
もしかすると近い将来、ボリウッドダンスを真似して家族から心配される日が来るかもしれない。
その時は温かく見守っていただきたい。
世界は広い。
しかし人と人との距離は、思っているほど遠くない。
勇気を出して「Hello」と声をかければ、その瞬間に世界は少しだけ近くなる。
一期一会。
その言葉の意味を、私はまた一つ学んだ気がした。
Ichigo Ichie: From Tokyo to India
A few days ago, I met a man from India in Tokyo.
He works for Siemens in India.
If you ask whether I speak perfect English, the answer is simple: not even close.
My English is a unique combination of junior-high-school vocabulary, enthusiasm, and hand gestures.
Yet somehow, smiles seem to speak a universal language.
“Where are you from?”
That simple question opened the door to a wonderful conversation.
In Japan, we have a beautiful phrase: “Ichigo Ichie.”
It means, “Treasure every encounter, because it may never happen again in exactly the same way.”
Perhaps life itself is a collection of Ichigo Ichie moments.
The teammates I met on rugby fields.
The friends I met while studying rugby in England.
And now, a new friend from India whom I met under the Tokyo sky.
If I had decided not to speak because my English was imperfect, this photo and this memory would never have existed.
At 52 years old, I have learned something important.
The greatest risk in life is not failure.
It is allowing fear to prevent us from meeting new people.
To be honest, my knowledge of India is still limited to curry, cricket, and Bollywood.
But thanks to this encounter, I have become curious about Indian movies and music.
Who knows?
One day I may be attempting Bollywood dance moves and causing serious concern among my family members.
If that happens, please be kind.
The world is vast.
Yet the distance between people is often much shorter than we imagine.
Sometimes all it takes is one simple word:
“Hello.”
And suddenly, the world feels a little smaller and a lot warmer.
Ichigo Ichie.
