Always the same photos... Tips for pet photography to try when you're stuck

“Sleeping again... but still, so cute.” My 17-year-old cat sleeps almost all day long. Unlike in the past, I keep taking the same photos... but I still want to capture these moments.

I’m sure many owners of senior and high-senior pets feel the same way. But don’t worry! Even if they’re just sleeping, changing your shooting points can change the atmosphere.

So, here are a few tips. By the way, all of today’s photos were taken with a smartphone.

[Tip 1] Light through the curtains

The light is coming from the right. I snapped the photo while looking at the smartphone screen, checking that the softness of the light and the texture of her fur were captured nicely.

At this time, make sure to focus so the eyes don’t look blurry. (*If you tap the eyes on your smartphone screen, it should focus. If you want to know more... Google it.)

Also, I recommend using light coming from the side (side lighting).

[Tip 2] Lower the camera lens to the pet’s eye level

I took this from directly above, but, hmm... it’s not very interesting.

So, I held the lens upside down and snapped a photo with the intention of shooting from below. Oh... she opened her eyes. Sorry for waking you up!
Hmm, it feels a bit cramped.

Maybe I need more negative space. The balance (composition) is also not quite there.

I held the smartphone vertically (this is called a vertical composition), stepped back a bit, and snapped a photo. While doing that, she made such a funny face!

The point is to move both yourself and your smartphone around and try different things through trial and error.

The reason your photos become one-note might actually be because you’re always shooting from the same angle.

[Tip 3] Take photos in various places

She’s completely asleep. (Lol)

Doesn't your beloved cat sleep in all sorts of places? My cat, May, sleeps in her favorite spots, of course, but also in unexpected places.

Right now, I am somewhat conscious of the 'day of parting that will eventually come.' That's why... I try to capture every look whenever I notice it.

Someday, when that parting comes, I'm sure I'll be looking for May all over the house. It was the same with Sora.

For now, I want to preserve May's daily life as much as possible.
...So, I'm chasing May around wherever she is? And snapping away.

[The biggest tip] Capture what you love

Any photo is fine. Even if it's out of focus or cut off.

If you feel 'beloved,' 'cute,' or 'my heart melts,' just take the picture and keep it.

I'm sure there are some people who find it painful to look at photos of their pets after they have passed away.

But once your feelings have settled? The presence of a pet, who is just like family, will surely give you courage.
They will encourage you. And they will stay close to your heart.
