[Mt. Kongo] Walking in Search of Spring Flowers | Ninrinso Colonies, Mountain Peonies, and Yamato-gusa
Mt. Kongo in spring is a mountain
where you find yourself stopping with every step.
Colonies of Ninrinso (wood anemones),
quietly blooming mountain peonies,
and tiny Yamato-gusa swaying in the breeze.
I was in the middle of a long traverse,
but before I knew it, I kept stopping to look for flowers.
Introduction
Mt. Kongo is a popular mountain representing the Kansai region,
but spring is also a season where you can encounter many flowers.
This time, while walking the Diamond Trail,
Ninrinso colonies
Mountain peonies
Yamato-gusa
Saigoku-sabanoo
and others, I enjoyed the spring flowers.
I hope this will be helpful for those who are
wondering what kind of flowers can be seen on Mt. Kongo.
List of flowers seen this time
These are the flowers seen during this mountain hike.
Ninrinso
Midori-ninrinso (Green wood anemone)
Mountain peony
Yamato-gusa
Saigoku-sabanoo
Enreisou (Trillium)
Mitella japonica
Disporum smilacinum
Rhododendron kaempferi
Flowers kept appearing one after another as I walked,
so I couldn't really make much progress (laughs).
Anemone flaccida colony
I was surprised when I arrived at the site.
The Anemone flaccida blooming everywhere was truly magnificent,
just like a white carpet.

While walking through the colony,
it was also fun to spend time with everyone looking for green Anemone flaccida.
We were able to find one plant safely.

Theligonum japonica
It was a very small flower,
and because it swayed in the wind, it was difficult to photograph.
Even after being shown where it was,
at first I couldn't even tell where it was (laughs).
It was a small flower, but it had a mysterious presence.

Mountain Peony
I thought it might still be too early,
but I was able to see the Mountain Peonies that had started to bloom.
There were many buds, giving the impression that the main event was yet to come.
The half-opened flowers were very beautiful,
and I was happy to have encountered them at just the right time.

Trillium
I also saw many trilliums.
There were still many plants in bud, so
it looks like there will be even more to enjoy from here on.

Saigoku-sabanoo
I found the Saigoku-sabanoo after a veteran hiker pointed it out to me.
It was a truly small and adorable flower.
Even after being told, "It's right here,"
I couldn't see it at all at first (laughs).
It is one of the flowers I was happy to encounter.

Azalea blooming status on Mount Yamato-Katsuragi
The azaleas on Mount Yamato-Katsuragi are currently "just starting to bloom."
Some early trees have started to open their flowers, but
overall, the impression is that they are just "starting to show color."
The best time to see them will likely be around next weekend.
Once they are in full bloom,
the mountainside will likely be a spectacular sight, dyed in red.

Where they were seen
Ninrinso: Around the summit of Mount Kongo
Mountain peony: Near the colony
Theligonum japonicum: Damp areas of the forest floor
Dichocarpum nipponicum: Near the streamside
*To prevent trampling, specific locations are withheld.
Recommended Season
I walked this route in early May.
The azaleas were just starting to bloom, but
the Anemone flaccida and other spring flowers were very beautiful.
If you time it with the peak azalea season,
the mountain will likely be even more vibrant.

Conclusion
I was in the middle of a long traverse, but
I spent my time on Mt. Kongo in spring stopping many times along the way.
It was a day where I felt the joy of "time spent searching for flowers,"
which is different from the fun of just connecting peaks.
I would like to walk it again in a different season.
