Generative AI Tips #25: 'An AI that polishes your words when you think you might be coming on too strong'

In our daily lives, when we try to write something, there are moments when we feel, 'Is this phrasing a bit too strong?' or 'I wish I could convey this a little more gently.'
This is especially true for messages directed at someone or short explanatory texts. Even when you intend to be neutral, you might find that when you read it back later, it leaves a somewhat harsh impression. Have you ever had that experience?

Lately, I've started relying on ChatGPT for those moments.
I ask things like, 'Could you rewrite this sentence a bit more politely?' or 'Make the tone not too casual, but not too stiff either.' Then, it adjusts it to a surprisingly 'just right' balance.

What I find particularly helpful is how it gently rounds off the sharp edges of words I hadn't even realized were there.
For example, when I write 'You should do this,' and it comes back as 'It might be better to do this,' I realize, 'Ah, this is definitely kinder to the reader.'

As I repeat this 'exchange,' I feel like my own way of using words is gradually becoming more refined.
ChatGPT is like a quiet editor that teaches me, 'It's easier to convey this if you say it this way.' It's not harsh, but it points things out properly. It feels like a thoughtful partner.

It's often said that 'words are tools,' but knowing how to use them is surprisingly difficult.
Especially now, when so much communication is text-only, the way you say something can drastically change how it's received, even if the content is the same. Perhaps that's why having an AI 'help you polish' your words is becoming such a natural choice.

Moving forward, while I will continue to hold onto the feelings I want to convey myself,
when I'm unsure about how to express them, I think I'll borrow a little help from AI to polish my words.
