The 37th 'Department of What Are You Talking About' Newsletter: It's All About 'Jiguchi'
What is Jiguchi?
A form of wordplay where common proverbs or idioms are modified by substituting words with similar pronunciations. Examples include 'Geko ni gohan' (Rice for a non-drinker) instead of 'Neko ni koban' (Gold coins to a cat).
Source: 'Digital Daijisen' (Shogakukan)
It also appears in the Taiga drama 'Berabo'
The exchanges between Tsutaju and Urokogataya frequently feature Edo-period jiguchi (such as 'Arigata-yama no tonbi karasu').
From the NHK website
I tried creating some images.
First, here is an image of a jiguchi lantern created with ChatGPT.

Look at those practiced hands! 😊
Since I hit a limit with ChatGPT,
I created this image using Microsoft's Bing Image Creator.

The hem of the kimono looks nicely tattered.
That sorrowful expression is irresistible.
Here is today's headline image processed in the style of a ukiyo-e print.

I feel like I've met them somewhere before, or maybe not.
Finally, I managed to create an image that looks like a scene from a Taiga drama, so please take a look.

looks a bit like a Western book, which is a shame, but it has a great atmosphere.

I will add an image with brighter colors.

37??
It's 37, not 3.7, that's amazing.
(I apologize to those who are new here, as this article may not make sense to you.)
Section Chief Konishi Kinoko, thank you as always for collecting and commenting.
If there is anything you can use for the header image, please feel free to use it.
ButSakou-sanandTomori-sanmight draw some wonderful pictures, I feel.
I will stop here for today.
I'm going back to lesson preparation.
Thank you for reading until the end.
See you in the next note.

Tomori-san edited the image and created a top header for me.
It turned out very lovely. I would be happy if you could take a look.
The 'sparrow in worn-out clothes' has become a dignified sparrow!
Thank you, Tomori-san.
