The Question of Whether We Can Embrace Small Voices
The atmosphere contained in the Japanese phrase "everyone is doing it"
is not coldness, but rather a kindness that has been polished over a long period of time.
It is wisdom for maintaining harmony, not disrupting the situation, and moving the whole forward.
Talk of the community and talk of parent-child relationships
are on that same continuum.
School is
a place to learn how to read and write,
a place to practice interacting with people of different ages and values,
and a place to learn the customs and ways of learning as a Japanese person.
That is certainly an important aspect.
At the same time,
the voice saying "I don't want to go" is also certainly there.
There are days when it was fun to go, and
there are days when one absolutely cannot go today.
It is not a matter of
one being right and the other being wrong.
Until a little while ago, I
thought, "I must properly pave the way to the future for my child to live happily."
But, I tried changing my way of thinking.
A child is a child.
I am me.
I wait for the child to think for themselves and
put into words what they will do today.
Just by doing that, daily life has become surprisingly comfortable.
Perhaps now,
all of Japan is standing before the same question.
While valuing the voices of "everyone",
can we embrace the very small voices
that have not yet become words?
Instead of breaking the culture of reading the air,
can we raise the resolution of that air by one more level?
I can sort of understand the feeling of those who
call that an ascension.
Rather than something going up,
it feels more like breathing becoming deeper.
For both children and adults,
toward a society where we can gently offer
"what I am feeling here and now"
before "correctness."
I feel that a quiet, but certain change
has already begun.
"Are you listening to your own voice?"
