(39) Freshman year of college: My challenge began with learning to rely on others
Hello everyone, this is Ayato.
For this 39th entry, I will be writing about the theme I realized after becoming a college freshman: that 'relying on others was also a challenge.' Up until now, I was the type who tried to manage everything on my own as much as possible. However, through my college life, that way of thinking has gradually changed.
I thought doing things alone was the norm
Up until high school, I thought it was normal to research and solve things on my own even if I didn't understand them. I felt that asking others was a sign of weakness, so I avoided it as much as I could.
That attitude continued for a while even after I entered college.
Even if the assignment details were vague or I couldn't grasp the intent of the class, I chose to 'just do it myself' for the time being.
Situations where I am entrusted with decisions have increased in college
In college classes, there are often no detailed explanations. I have to think for myself about what to do, how far to take it, and how to proceed.
At first, that freedom made me anxious.
As I continued to think by myself, time would just slip away, and I found myself in more situations where I wondered, 'Is this the right way to do it?'
The result of taking the plunge and asking someone
One day, I decided to take the plunge and ask the people around me. Honestly, I was very nervous and felt embarrassed.
However, when I actually asked, they answered me surprisingly easily.
Moreover, knowing that there were others who were struggling just like me made me feel that 'perhaps I didn't need to carry it all on my own.'
How relying on others made things easier
Since I started relying on others, my mind has felt a little lighter. This is because I am now able to resolve things early instead of leaving them unknown.
Also, by learning how others think, I felt that my own perspective had broadened.
It was a major change to be able to notice options that I couldn't see when I was thinking by myself.
The form of a challenge is different for everyone
Until now, I thought that a challenge meant "starting something new." However, I now feel that "facing things I was bad at" is also a challenge.
For me, relying on others was a big step in itself.
Admitting that I can't do something and asking for help is not easy, but it also brings many rewards.
Looking ahead to my college life
From now on, I want to move forward while engaging with those around me, rather than keeping things I don't understand to myself.
I believe that realizing this feeling during my freshman year of college will surely be useful for my future life.
Rather than aiming for perfection, I want to be someone who can act flexibly.
Conclusion
This 39th article is also a record of a challenge for me.
If there is anyone out there struggling in the same way, I would be happy if this could be a trigger for them to think, "It's okay to rely on others."
Thank you for reading this far. That is all for today.
