Setsubun has arrived again this year.
Every year in our house, I have been the one playing the demon.
The kind where I put on a mask and appear shouting, "Ooooooh!"
My daughters squealing with delight while throwing beans... that heartwarming event.
That was the case, but...
I was finally found out.
It happened while we were talking about Setsubun as a family.
Second daughter: "The demon is Daddy, right?"
...
Second daughter: "Because your hair is..."
Stop. Don't say anything past that.
No, I get it, okay? I'm aware that my hair sticking out from the mask is curly. But really, you're going to point that out?
My eldest daughter is already in junior high, so she had known for a long time, but she read the room and kept quiet for me.
Little sister... please learn from your older sister's kindness.
If I've been found out, then so be it! Let's decide with rock-paper-scissors!
My partner suggested, "Since you've already been found out, let's decide who plays the demon this year with rock-paper-scissors!"
Then my second daughter said, "I don't want to be the demon!"
A declaration that she won't even participate.
Isn't that unfair, especially after you were the one who spilled the beans?
And so, the three of us—me, my partner, and my eldest daughter—played the fateful game of rock-paper-scissors.

So, my partner is scheduled to wear the demon pants this year.

Until last year, I was the one saying 'Ouch, ouch!', but I never expected to be on the cheering side... It's a little bit sad, but also a little bit happy.
