Calligraphy Strategy for Left-Handers
On a winter break afternoon, my eldest daughter, a first-year middle school student, was working on her calligraphy homework.
On the desk were calligraphy paper, ink, and both large and small brushes. For some reason, she, who is left-handed, was holding the large brush in her right hand to write..
“Huh? Are you writing with your right hand?”
Eldest daughter: “Yeah. It’s easier to write with my right hand for calligraphy.”
I thought that was interesting, and as I watched, after she finished writing the large characters, she switched the small brush to her left hand and began writing her name.
Large brush in the right hand, small brush in the left.
This seems to be her optimal way of doing calligraphy.
Just when I thought she had been concentrating for a while, she suddenly let out an “Oh!”
When I looked, there was a small hole in the calligraphy paper where she was in the middle of writing her name.
“Maybe I used too much ink...”
Muttering to herself, she took out a new sheet of paper and started over.
But then, “Oh!” again.
There was a hole again.
Watching closely, I felt that the way she moved the brush with her left hand was somehow different.
Characters written for right-handers are basically designed to be written by “pulling” from left to right and top to bottom. But when writing with the left hand, that movement becomes a “pushing” motion.
“You know, I think the paper tears easily because you’re pushing the brush when you use your left hand.”
“Ah... I see.”
My daughter seemed convinced. But she continued immediately.
“But still, it’s hard to even write my name with my right hand. I can put up with using my right hand for the big characters, but I really want to write my name with my left hand using the small brush.”
In the end, that day, despite tearing holes in the paper several times, she managed to complete a piece she could submit.
Large brush in the right hand, small brush in the left. And the occasional hole that opens up.
This was her calligraphy style for this year.
But I wonder what she will do next year?
Will she try using the small brush with her right hand? Will she find a way to overcome the push-stroke issue with her left hand? Or will she choose the same 'battle with the holes' as this year?
