3 Reasons Why I End Up Saying "Thank You" to AI (Is It Just Me?)
When using generative AI like ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini, I find myself saying "thank you."
Does this happen to you?
It happens to me... it happens all the time.
"Tell me a recipe for dinner tonight" -> "Thank you!"
"What is the intent of this code?" -> "That helped, thanks"
"Rewrite this email to be polite" -> "Thank you so much"
At this point, "thank you" comes out reflexively.
But I wondered if I was the only one, and when I looked it up, I found that there are surprisingly many people who feel the same way.
So, this time, I have explored the reasons why we end up saying "thank you" to AI.
Reason #1 for saying "thank you" to AI: It feels like you've received polite service
Isn't AI incredibly polite?
"How about this?" "I hope this is helpful." "If you have any other questions..."
It feels like I'm talking to an excellent secretary or a shop clerk.
While a human might say "Wait a second" or "Hmm, I don't know," AI is always kind.
That's why I end up saying "thank you" just as I would to a human.
Human-like polite service = wanting to say thank you; this might be a natural reaction.
Reason #2 for saying "thank you" to AI: I'm genuinely being helped, so I want to express my gratitude honestly
This is a simple matter, but I am truly being helped.
Whether it's getting a recipe, help with work documents, or looking up things I don't understand.
Things that used to take hours are solved in minutes.
In such moments, it might be natural for feelings of gratitude to arise, making you want to say "thank you."
Even if the other party is an AI, the fact that you were helped remains unchanged.
Reason #3 for saying "thank you" to AI: The Japanese "Otsukaresama" culture
This is purely my own speculation, but it seems that unique Japanese culture might also be involved.
We say "thank you" when we buy something at a convenience store, and we say "thank you" when someone presses the elevator button for us, don't we?
Even if the other party isn't human, we end up saying "thank you" when someone does something for us.
We don't say "thank you" to a vending machine, but because we have the sense of having a conversation with AI, we end up treating it like a human.
Pros and cons of saying "thank you" to AI
The pro is that it makes you feel good! The con might be that it's a waste of electricity and time.
Since AI has no emotions, there is no point in thanking it.
It would be more efficient to ask the next question instead.
That is one way of thinking.
However, I am still in the camp that wants to say thank you.
This is because saying thank you helps me organize my own feelings.
Conclusion: If you want to say it, just say it

What I found out after looking into it is that quite a few people say "thank you" to AI.
And that it is by no means embarrassing or strange.
I think it is a sign of human kindness.
Isn't it wonderful to be able to feel gratitude, even when the other party is an AI?
So, if you want to say it, I think you should proudly say "thank you".
