So, this time,

My son asked me to fix his wallet because it was about to break.

What's it like...

The thread has snapped, and it'shanging by a thread.
I'm surprised he used it this long.

I was planning to watch a drama today, but it suddenly turned into leathercraft time.

I made this wallet for my son's 15th birthday.
Isn't a leather wallet cool for a middle schooler?
He didn't get it at all, and he used a wallet with a moe character on it until he graduated high school, but...

It seems he finally graduated from the moe wallet after entering university, and started using this one.

Well then, let's fix it.
First, I'll remove the broken thread.
It's for the entire outer perimeter.
I'll pick it out one stitch at a time.
It's not like you can just cut it in one place and pull it out.
So, it was technically still connected as long as one stitch remained.

This process of cutting and removing the thread one stitch at a time is the hardest part.
And, I managed to remove it all.

After that, I just have to sew it back up as usual.
I've introduced this in other articles before, but leathercraft uses a unique sewing method.
You attach needles to both ends of the thread and sew while crossing them.
Like this.

So, you have to cut the length of thread you'll use beforehand.
Getting the hang of this is quite difficult.

If you cut it too short, you can't finish sewing.
That's obvious, right?
What if it's too long?
It's a waste (lol)
Also, it's harder to sew and takes more time.

As a rule of thumb, about 3.5 times the distance you're sewing.
It depends on the thickness of the leather and the stitch pitch, but try using this as a rough guide.
(I wonder if this is useful to anyone)

Finally, I'll apply some Renapur and it's done.
Renapur is this stuff.

It can be used on various leather products, so it might be good to have one.

And with that, it's finished.

The contrast between the black leather and white thread is striking.
Since it's been well-used, it has a different vibe than a brand-new one.
The good thing about leather products is not just that they develop character, but that they can be repaired.
The leather itself doesn't tear easily.
If you re-stitch it, it can usually be fixed.

By the way, a friend once asked me to repair their boots.
That was also tough, but I managed to fix them.
This is it.

They said the thread above the heel had snapped, so I repaired it.
I really think this is craftsmanship.
