A [Super Introductory Guide] That Will Change Your Image of "Yakuzen" 180 Degrees
I am Iwai, Editor-in-Chief of UTSUWA Publishing.
The book being released by UTSUWA Publishing this time is
"Casual Yakuzen: Eat, Laugh, and Live a 'Healthy and Vibrant' Life"
.
If I were to introduce this book in one word, it is a
[Super Introductory Guide to Yakuzen]
, and I want it to be read by people who "are interested in Yakuzen or healthy eating, but somehow can't find the motivation to start."
This is a book that will dispel all negative images of Yakuzen and help you gain an essential understanding of "what is health?"
The negative images of Yakuzen are "all wrong"!
When it comes to Yakuzen, many people probably think of images like the ones below.
Seems difficult
Seems time-consuming (seems like a hassle)
Seems expensive
Seems bitter (how is it different from Kampo?)
When I first spoke with the author, Mahiro Tsuzuki (Representative Director of Azu Club Co., Ltd.), I had exactly these images.
However, as I talked with Ms. Tsuzuki, I realized,
"Wait, that's Yakuzen too!?"
"Yakuzen isn't just incredibly accessible, it's actually the food wisdom that my grandmother and mother used to talk about!"
and I had my first-ever "Yakuzen Aha! experience" (moment of insight) in my life.
To sum it up, Yakuzen is
Seems difficult→ Same difficulty as everyday cooking
Seems time-consuming (seems like a hassle)→ Not time-consuming (and not a hassle)
It seems expensive→ Same cost as everyday cooking
It seems bitter (how is it different from Kampo?)→ It's delicious
is what it is.
The wisdom of Yakuzen is hidden within the cooking you do every day without even thinking about it.
By being just a little more conscious, you can incorporate the wisdom of Yakuzen into your everyday cooking.
Tsuzuki-san's Yakuzen is a thoroughly practical health method.
Japanese food is a diet that was originally well-thought-out and suited for the Japanese people, and it contained not only deliciousness but also a high level of health consciousness.
What is health?
What is necessary to become healthy?
Switching to a nutritionally balanced meal menu / Supplementing missing nutrients with supplements
Fasting (setting certain restrictions on meals for a specific period)
Refraining from snacks like sweets and sugary foods
Exercising
Going on a diet
Quitting smoking...
There are surely many others. However, aren't many of the health methods taught to us about:
・Starting something new (exercise, switching to a nutritionally balanced diet, etc.)・Giving up something you like (quitting smoking, dieting, etc.)
?
The reason these don't last is,in a word, because they are "difficult" or "painful".
Unless you are in a situation where your illness has worsened and you must immediately start or stop something, your motivation will not last.
(It's difficult to increase your cooking repertoire or secure time for exercise while you're busy every day, isn't it...)
However, the Yakuzen that Tsuzuki-san teaches is centered on "everyday meals."
It's just about being a little more conscious, a little more creative. That alone changes your food and how your body reacts when you eat it.
By the way, what is health in the first place?
A state of not having any illnesses or injuries
A state of looking youthful for your age
A state where you can be smiling...
"The older you get, the higher the chance of getting sick, and it's good to look young, right?"
This is Iwai's personal opinion (I think some illnesses can be prevented, but aren't there many that are unavoidable, like being in an accident?)
In that case, I think it's better to focus on being able to smile.
Efforts like dieting, dietary restrictions, and eating meals with a balanced nutritional profile for all three meals are wonderful, but if they wear you down, cause stress, and increase the time you spend feeling irritated, then it defeats the purpose, don't you think?
We are living creatures, and living creatures are part of nature.
We didn't sprout up from the gaps between city buildings, nor are we products born from the power of science.
In Tsuzuki-san's book, she explains in an easy-to-understand way how to receive the blessings of nature within the cycle of nature.
Since reading the book, Iwai has come to think,
"While health is one way to live happily, perhaps living happily itself is a health method."
.
・Those who want to learn about Yakuzen casually
・Those who want to be careful about their diet but are too busy with daily life
・Those who want to know the relationship between Japanese culture, nature, and food
