[Novel] 'Rainy Tanabata'
For this one day, I hope for good weather every year.
Because they say if it's cloudy or rainy, they can't meet.
I tilted my head and looked up at the night sky, wondering if the Milky Way, where Orihime and Hikoboshi gaze at each other across the river, was over there.
I don't know the real circumstances of the Milky Way, but if it's cloudy, they could just build a bridge of clouds to cross, and if it's raining, they could row a small boat across the sea of the heavens while looking down at the world below.
They are so inflexible.
They have the power to become stars, so surely a little cloud or rain shouldn't matter. If you want to meet, it only happens once a year, so just go and meet properly.
The Rain Maiden spun her umbrella around.
'The fact that I'm feeling this good means this year's Tanabata will be rainy too.'
It's not that I can't walk through the rain without an umbrella, but it really annoys me when humans who can see me get creeped out.
I have no choice but to carry an umbrella for the sake of the humans who can see me on rainy days.
In truth, I just enjoy picking up and imitating the stylish umbrellas humans use.
The Rain Maiden, who cannot become a star, curses the rigid meeting rules of the stars, who are supposed to be so great, saying, 'Are you idiots to let the weather stop you?'
If you want to meet, then meet.
As I was taking shelter from the rain under the eaves of a shrine (though I don't really need to), the Sun Boy popped his head out.
'Sister, it's raining again.'
'You're annoying. It's the rainy season, so it can't be helped.'
The Sun Boy had dyed his hair gold today and was wearing an aloha shirt and flip-flops.
'You're dressed quite festively.'
'I'm dressed wonderfully.'
The Sun Boy smiled happily and carefree.
"Sorry about that. Making the weather so gloomy."
Seeing this carefree nature makes the Rain Maiden feel incredibly irritated.
Perhaps it is because that is how she was "created".
"It's not something you need to apologize for, sister. It's just the season. Rain is caused by the Pacific high-pressure system and moist winds from the south..."
"Could you not casually dismiss me, a Rain Maiden, with science?"
"Oh, my apologies. It seems I've put you in a bad mood again, sister."
"You're lucky, aren't you? Welcomed wherever you go."
For the first time, the Sun Boy's face clouded over.
"That's not necessarily true. Lately, there's been too much sunshine, so people often complain that crops are failing or that the produce is poor. The sun is too strong, the summer is too hot... Both you and I, sister, balance is important for both of us."
"Maybe so. And those two fools won't be able to meet this year. Because I'm in top form."
"Those two fools?"
The Rain Maiden pointed at the overcast sky with her frilled umbrella. The Sun Boy, who had looked up at the sky in response, nodded deeply as if he had understood.
"Ah. It certainly seems impossible this year."
"They're so stubborn. Saying no to clouds, no to rain."
"Maybe they don't actually intend to meet. It's quite convenient for them, considering they've been treated as a legend for thousands of years, dragging humans into it too."
The Rain Maiden's eyes widened at the rare, sarcastic tone from the Sun Boy.
The balance of the world is crumbling.
Perhaps the balance within the Sun Boy is also crumbling.
And the same could be said for her, the Rain Maiden, who was "created" as his counterpart.
She shivered and rubbed her arms.
When you feel like throwing a tantrum, when you are about to lose your reason. Has that time not increased? Has the interval not become shorter?
What are humans doing?
"There are even humans who project their own happiness onto those two fools. Take it easy, sister."
"That's none of my business, and it's none of your concern."
"Sister, please stay just the way you are."
Terudoji laughed heartily and cheerfully once again.
See you later, the boy in the blonde hair and aloha shirt waved his hand and disappeared as if melting into the rain.
"What do you mean, 'stay the way I am'? I'm not a snow spirit, I'm a rain maiden."
She frowned in annoyance as she watched Terudoji go, tapping the ground irritably with her umbrella.
"Fine, I'll do something about it. So make sure you meet. If you don't meet, I won't forgive you!"
The rain maiden thrust her umbrella toward the sky and fumed.
On the day of Tanabata, the rain that had been falling until the afternoon cleared up beautifully by evening.
They say the Milky Way shone beautifully in the night sky.
