What is a roots journey?

A roots journey is,

a journey to visit the lands where your ancestors lived,

and to trace their footsteps.

The place they were born.

The place they lived.

The place they worked.

The place they rest.

Beyond what can be understood from family registers alone,

by feeling the atmosphere and scenery of that land,

the history of your family becomes a little more personal.

It is a little different from a trip to visit tourist spots.

A journey to trace the footprints of those who lived.

That is what I consider a roots journey to be.

Beyond the family register, there is a world yet unknown

When people hear the term ancestral research,

many may think of collecting family registers.

Of course, family registers are important.

However,

there are things you cannot understand just by looking at family registers.

What kind of place was that land?

What kind of scenery did they see while they lived there?

Where is the family temple located?

What kind of history did the region have?

By actually visiting the site,

you may see family stories that were not visible through text alone.

On a roots journey, you can make discoveries like these

The reason I continue my roots journeys

Through my work in inheritance and end-of-life planning,

I have encountered many family histories.

On the other hand,

I wish I had asked about it sooner.

I didn't know where the grave was.

No one knows about the past anymore.

I have encountered such situations many times.

That is precisely why,

I want to cherish,

the records and memories that remain today.

Family registers.

Graves.

Old photographs.

Local history.

Stories from the past heard from family.

Using these as clues,

tracing the traces of a person's life.

That is what a journey to one's roots means to me.

First, start with a small step.

No special knowledge is required.

Try looking at a family register.

Try asking your family about the past.

Try visiting your family grave.

Try opening an old album.

Such a small step
