Days when I feel like I'm thinking, but nothing is moving forward
I definitely have time to think.
No, actually, I think I'm someone who thinks quite a lot.
And yet,
there are days when I feel like nothing is moving forward.
During my commute, before I go to sleep,
something is always spinning around in my head.
And yet,
when I stop and ask myself, "So, what was it I wanted to do again?"
I find that,
surprisingly, I haven't grasped anything at all.
It's as if, all that time,
I had just been holding onto thin air.
The "intention" to think and the "feeling" of having things organized
seem similar, but they are completely different things.
When I have the "intention" to think,
my head becomes noisy.
Past events pop up,
someone's words come back to me,
and I even get ahead of myself
worrying about a future that hasn't happened yet.
But much of that
is just spinning around in the same place.
It feels like I'm moving forward,
but in reality, my position hasn't changed.
On the other hand,
the feeling of having things organized
is a bit quieter.
It's okay if I don't have an answer.
It's okay if my hesitation hasn't disappeared.
I am properly giving myself permission for that.
And,
"where I am standing right now"
I have a sense of knowing that.
There is impatience, but little confusion.
There is anxiety, but I can see the direction.
My head, strangely, becomes quiet.
This difference is surprisingly large.
We often
mistakenly believe that time spent thinking equals time spent moving forward.
But in truth,
the longer we spend thinking,
the more our thoughts can become tangled.
That feeling when you try to untangle them alone,
and you just end up adding more knots.
Organizing isn't about
finding the right answer.
To put it another way,
it might be about
properly identifying 'things that don't need to be thought about right now'.
It's like taking out only what you need on your desk,
and putting everything else away in a drawer.
If right now,
even though you are thinking about many things,
you don't feel like anything is being resolved.
Or rather, if you feel like your mind
is more cluttered than it was before.
That doesn't mean you lack thinking ability,
nor does it mean you are approaching it the wrong way.
It might just be that you are holding onto
several burdens you don't need to carry alone.
At times like that, just by looking at the flow of your thoughts
together with someone else,
a moment where things turn into words can suddenly arrive.
The moment that phenomenon is given a name,
the fog inside you
will change its shape a little.
I usually create time for dialogue with such people,
not to provide answers,
but to help organize their thoughts.
It's okay if you can't put it into words well yet.
Just by shifting from the state of 'intending' to think
to the 'feeling' of having things organized,
the scenery you see will change.
