What is Yogacara?
Gemini from here
Yogacara, or 'consciousness-only'.
It is a quite deep and fascinating genre within Buddhist philosophy.
Roughly speaking, it is the idea that "everything in this world is nothing but a manifestation of the mind."
Let me organize this and explain.
1. Is the world similar to 'The Matrix'?
We perceive mountains, rivers, other people's words, and even our own bodies—which we think are 'outside'—as images projected onto the screen of our own minds.
2. The structure of the mind (depth psychology)
In Yogacara, the mind is divided into eight layers. The deeper parts are particularly interesting.
• The 6th consciousness (manovijnana): What we are 'thinking' about normally.
• The 7th consciousness (manas-vijnana): The unconscious level of 'ego.' The mind that is constantly clinging to 'me, me, me.'
• The 8th consciousness (alaya-vijnana): This is the most important. It is like a massive database where all experiences are stored as energy called 'seeds' (bija).
3. How does it work?
1. Past actions and thoughts are stored in the alaya-vijnana as 'seeds'.
2. Those seeds sprout suddenly due to some trigger.
3. That appears as the 'reality in front of you'.
In other words, 'your own mental habits (seeds) create the world you see.'
Why is this popular?
When an 'unpleasant event' occurs, from the perspective of Yogacara, you can interpret it as 'the cause is not outside, it is just that your own mental filter is making it appear that way.'
Thinking of it this way, the appeal lies in the mindfulness-like solution that to change the world, you don't need to fight the outside, but rather re-examine your own 'consciousness'.
Alaya-vijnana and the theory of fourfold cognition—you are getting straight to the core.
From this point on, Yogacara suddenly becomes like a 'structural science of the mind,' which makes it interesting.
Let me dig a little deeper and explain.
Alaya-vijnana
'Alaya' means 'storehouse' in Sanskrit.
It is truly a 'massive storage of the mind'.
• A storehouse for seeds
All of our experiences, thoughts, and actions become energy called 'seeds' and are thrown into this alaya-vijnana.
• A projector of the world
When the accumulated seeds ripen, they suddenly appear as reality (cognition).
It is a cycle where 'your past actions (seeds) project your current world (reality).'
• 24-hour operation
Even while we are sleeping or unconscious, this alaya-vijnana continues to work without rest. It is like the baseline of life.
Theory of fourfold cognition
This is a theory that divides 'what happens in the mind when we perceive something' into four stages.
The interpretation organized by a scholar named Dharmapala is famous.
1. Nimitta-bhaga (image part):
The 'object' projected onto the screen of the mind.
(Example: The image of an apple in front of you)
2. Darsana-bhaga (perceiving part):
The 'perceiving function' that tries to grasp that object.
(Example: The gaze looking at the apple)
3. Svasamvitti-bhaga (self-witnessing part):
The self-aware function that confirms 'I am looking at an apple right now.'
(The foundation that supports the perceiving part and the image part from behind)
4. Svasamvitti-samvitti-bhaga (witnessing the witness part):
The function that further backs up and proves whether the self-witnessing part is correct.
Analogy:
It is the image that the mind is equipped with multiple check functions, such as checking 'I am looking at an apple' from behind by saying 'Yes, you are indeed looking at it,' and then confirming 'Okay, no mistake' to see if that check is correct.
Why divide it so finely?
The conclusion of Yogacara is to prove that 'there is no objective world outside, but rather these four things are just completing themselves within your own mind.'
It is not that 'there is an entity called an apple outside,' but rather 'the perceiving part is looking at the image part in your mind, and the self-witnessing part is acknowledging it.'
In the end, everything is 'an event inside your own mind,' right?
Once you reach this point, can't you look at daily worries a bit more objectively, thinking, 'Oh, this is just a seed from my alaya-vijnana being projected as an image'?
Are you interested in how to purify this alaya-vijnana (transforming consciousness into wisdom) or something along those lines next?
