To All New Professionals: 3 Suggestions from a Man Who Worked for 9 Years
I am writing this article for all of you who are becoming new professionals starting today.
What do I think is important for the professional life that begins today?
To put it briefly, I would like to propose the following three points.
❶ If things get truly painful, run away. Never lie to yourself.
❷ Deduct a fixed amount from your salary for savings or investments. It will be useful in the future. I guarantee it.
❸ Why do you work? Write it down whenever you have the chance. That is what a career is.
Now, I will explain below. Starting with a self-introduction.
Self-Introduction
I am 31 years old and a father of one.
Nine years ago, I joined a general home appliance manufacturer as a sales representative, and after that, I was involved in B2C advertising work for five years. Later, I changed jobs to an online advertising agency. After working as a consultant for retail promotion advertising distribution and media development, I resigned yesterday, March 31st.
Starting today, I am a man who has begun a dual life as a vocational school student and a sole proprietor.
By the way, I am a liberal arts major, and my favorite movie is "Star Wars." This is irrelevant.
Now, regarding the three suggestions above, why do I think they are important?
I would like to explain based on my own nine years of company experience.
❶ If things get truly painful, run away. Never lie to yourself.
"Running away" here means resigning, changing jobs, taking a leave of absence, requesting a transfer, or consulting with specific organizations.
"Hey, today is your first day at work. Isn't that too negative from the start..."
Yes. That is fair. But it is important.
Premise: When a person is working with all their might on something, having a safety netincreases the probability of achieving better performance.
For example, overseas travel. Everyone buys insurance before traveling. Why?
Because it allows you to spend your travel days with peace of mind without being distracted by trivial things.
As a result, the trip is more likely to become a happy memory.
Next, sports.
There is a medical team at the stadium in case of injury. Why?
Because it allows you to play with all your might without fearing minor accidents.
Then, what about a company?
While working at a company can be fun, it is also stressful. Why?
Because unlike before, everything is uncontrollable.
You are only taught the bare minimum (a company is an organization that pays salaries for work (not results), unlike a school where you pay fees to learn).
Generally, you cannot do the work you want (what kind of company would suddenly entrust work to someone with unknown ability and zero track record?).
There are many inefficient and unreasonable things (an organization is teamwork. If the organization adapts to the individual, nothing will work).
Clients are strict (when you are in the position of a customer paying for services, would you prefer a newcomer or a veteran?).
Life centers around work (8 hours of work/day x 5 days = 40 hours. One week is 24 hours x 7 days = 168 hours. Work time is 23% of that. Even though it accounts for less than a quarter of a week, why does it become the center of life? I want you to think about the factors).
You cannot choose your boss or colleagues (even if you had the right to choose, you wouldn't know the other person's personality or ability, nor the content of the work, so you couldn't actually choose. In fact, that is almost the same for the organization).
If I keep listing them, there are endless examples. And stress accumulates.
When it accumulates, it starts to affect your facial expressions, health, attitude, and feelings...
If you feel truly exhausted from the bottom of your heart, never push yourself too hard.
When you consult others, you often get told, "Don't worry about it" or "Try a little harder."
You can take that with a grain of salt. Because the other person is not you.
They don't understand the suffering you are feeling even by one millimeter (there may be people who empathize, but true understanding is impossible). Your suffering is yours alone in the world. You must cherish that feeling.
Then, how should you make the decision to run or not to run?
I think it is whether or not you are "lying to yourself."
What does it mean to lie to yourself? It means deceiving your heart and body.
The head is clever but clumsy. It tries to explain the cause of the suffering that the heart and body are feeling.
And it attaches plausible reasons. People cannot stay calm if they don't attach reasons or meanings to things they don't understand.
But the "sensation felt" by the heart and body does not need words or logic.
And more than your head can think, much more than that, the sensations felt by the heart and body are deep and correct.
When it hurts, it hurts. When it is painful, it is painful. It is neither more nor less than that. Because that is how it is.
That is why I want you to be honest with the sensations of your heart and body. Please do not lie.
You should make your judgment based on these sensations.
❷ Deduct a fixed amount from your salary for savings or investments. It will be useful in the future. I guarantee it.
No doubt about it. This habit will definitely help you.
Why?Because money holds the key to most of the decisions you will encounter in the future. For example, marriage. Wedding rings, moving, new life.
Even those who don't intend to get married don't know what will happen. Even if you don't want it, marriage might come knocking on your door.
For example, changing jobs. You might resign but fail to find a new job. Living expenses lead to peace of mind.
For example, studies. Skill improvement cannot be achieved without learning and experience. You never know when that will be needed. And valuable learning is not free.
There are many other things, but having a certain amount of "assets," even if the purpose is not decided, greatly influences human thinking, decision-making, and behavior. The labor mindset is completely different between someone who can quit their job at any time and someone who cannot quit because they need the earnings (this is the same story as the safety net in ❶ above. By the way, assets that allow you to quit your job at any time are called "f*** you money" in the US. It is an aggressive country through and through).
And for asset formation, capital is essential, and the source of capital is your salary.
And your salary
will not be saved 10,000% unless you deduct the savings portion in advance.I will say it again.
Your salary will not be saved 100,000,000,000,000% unless you deduct the savings portion in advance.
The human brain is programmed to use as much as it has.
This is a scientifically proven fact. Resisting it is not a good strategy. What you want now is not necessarily what you will want 10 years from now.
But the money you save now is money that will be even more necessary 10 years from now.
In other words, I think assets are possibilities.
❸ Why do you work? Write it down whenever you have the chance. That is what a career is.
Why? Because if you leave it in writing, you can have a dialogue with your past self.
That dialogue (comparison with your current self) is the trigger to think about your work philosophy, what you want to do, and how you want to live, and it becomes a foothold for deciding"your opinion on your own life."I want you to imagine something here. What was your self 10 years ago thinking?
I don't think you were thinking even one millimeter about this company you are starting to work at today (though maybe some people were).
Your self 10 years ago and your self today.
How have your thoughts on life connected? There are surely few people who can answer immediately.
Then what about 10 years from now?
Your thoughts in your 30s will surely be very different from your thoughts now.
How are those thoughts formed? The way to check is simple.
Record it each time. In a form that remains visible.
This is the same as Google Maps. You don't suddenly arrive at the "destination area."
If you have a record of the journey, the probability of getting lost 10 years from now will be lower.
Even if you don't have a clear goal 10 years from now, if you look back, you can see the path you have walked.
That path will surely help you decide your next course.
The etymology of "career" means the "rut" of a carriage.
A rut is the footprint of the path you have walked so far.
The above are my three suggestions, and they are opinions based on my own experience.
Although I wrote them in a high-handed way, looking back, there are only things I am embarrassed about and things I want to redo.
But it is a path I have certainly walked.
Still in the middle of the dream I envisioned back then... wait, wait, wait!
"Eiko no Kakehashi" (Bridge of Glory) just interrupted my thoughts.
I am also a freelancer starting today. I'm nervous, haha.
So, everyone. Let's enjoy this together!
That is all from une _pen.
See you in the next post.
