The reason why I can't help but think the waffle in my fridge is Takashi Sorimachi
Lately, I feel like I've been going a bit crazy trying to find commonalities between all sorts of things.
I've always had a personality that connects everything, but it's been especially bad lately.
I can't just let things in front of me be as they are.
For example,
a waffle recently came into my house.
I mean, I just bought it myself, but
after that, an eclair arrived, and then a donut was added, so things started to get lively.
Since the waffle was the first to arrive
I thought I should eat the waffle first, butto my surprise, the expiration date was until July. That's two months away.
That's when I was strangely impressed.
Even though it came first, it's staying the longest, waffle.
On the other hand, the eclair and donut that came later had to be eaten surprisingly quickly.
……That was supposed to be the end of it.
However, that's when I thought.
“This waffle is Takashi Sorimachi!!”
I know I'm crazy, but please stay calm and listen while I explain the reason.
A story was being constructed in my head.
“Beach Boys”
For those who don't know, it's
a drama where Takashi Sorimachi and Yutaka Takenouchi stay at a beach house all summer long.
Various casual visitors come and go at that beach house.
At one point, the girl working there (Ryoko Hirosue) says
“Everyone leaves so soon, it's lonely”
and the old man replies,
“It can't be helped, that's how it is. Everyone goes back to their own world.”
But there is an exception. When asked, “What about him?”
while looking at Sorimachi,
he says, “That one is special. There aren't usually idiots like that.”
──For some reason, that scene overlapped with the waffle and the donut.
The waffle that came first but stays forever is completely Sorimachi.
The eclair and donut that came later and left immediately are the other guests.
A summer drama had unfolded inside the refrigerator.
Sorimachi, who is sometimes pale and sometimes tanned.
The waffle, which has plain and chocolate variations.
The waffle and Sorimachi, both having a unique depth and “flavor”
Sorimachi, who is always there because he doesn't have a job.
The waffle, which is always there because it has a long shelf life.
At this point, there are fewer “reasons why it's not Sorimachi”.
And then I suddenly thought.
I had been watching who came and who left in front of that refrigerator the whole time.
In other words,
my position was Ryoko Hirosue in Beach Boys.
The poster girl of the inn watching those who leave.
The person who stays there while feeling a bit lonely as everyone stays for a short time and goes home.
Unlike that news, this is a genuine “self-proclaimed Ryoko Hirosue”.
The eclair disappeared, the donut disappeared.
After that, pudding came, and cream puffs came too, but they already had half-price stickers on them when they arrived.
In other words, from the waffle's perspective, they were existences that would leave soon, and sure enough, they disappeared quickly.
Along the way, for some reason, two “drinking yogurts” also came, and one was left behind without me knowing.
But that, too, disappeared before I knew it.
The inside of the refrigerator became quiet again,
and the only thing left was the waffle that came first.
But one morning, when I looked at it, I faintly saw the letters “7/4” on the waffle package.
──The deadline was approaching.
The inside of a refrigerator is nothing but meetings and partings. It's a little lonely.
The day to return will come.
Even for Sorimachi = the waffle, who I thought would be there forever, the “day to return” will finally come.
Quietly, but surely, the deadline arrives.
Come to think of it, the two in that drama also left on their own in the end.
“You can't stay like this forever. You have your own ‘ocean’ too.”
Told that by the owner of the inn, Sorimachi started walking with his back to the sea.
I think the waffle probably feels the same way.
When that day comes, I will gently pick up that bag in front of the refrigerator.
Just as Sorimachi returned, the waffle will also quietly disappear.
I intend to see it off properly while its flavor is still faintly cold.
