Why Tongue Coating Won't Go Away: Medicinal Recipes to Balance Gastric Juice
Introduction
I received this question during a TikTok Live session:
"I'm concerned about the coating on my tongue, so I brush it every day, but it just won't go away..."
Many people are concerned about tongue coating and scrub it diligently with a special brush. However, the cause of the coating is not the tongue itself. The answer lies in the "state of the fluid inside the stomach." It is more important to balance the inside of your stomach than to remove the coating. Today, I will explain the reason for this and share a medicinal recipe using seasonal ingredients for May.
Conclusion
Tongue coating is not a tongue problem; it is caused by the state of your gastric juice.
No matter how much you scrub the surface with a tongue brush, the coating will keep reappearing unless the inside of your stomach changes. The first thing to balance is the "inside of the stomach."
Reason
What the color of the coating tells you
There are three types of tongue coating: white, yellow, and no coating. Each reflects the state of your gastric juice.
White coating is a sign that sticky gastric juice has increased due to excessive carbohydrate intake. This state is common in people whose diet includes a lot of bread, rice, and sweets.
Yellow coating is a sign that your gastric juice has become thick and sludgy due to high intake of animal fats in addition to carbohydrates. This tends to appear after a series of fried foods, meat dishes, and alcohol.
**No coating** means your gastric juice is diluted with water. While it may look clean at first glance, this is also a sign of reduced digestive power.
What all three have in common is that they indicate a state prone to indigestion.
From the perspective of Traditional Chinese Medicine
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the tongue is considered a "window" that reflects the state of the body's interior. Tongue coating reflects the function of the gastrointestinal tract; a thick coating is a sign that excess substances have accumulated in the stomach and intestines, while no coating is a sign of a deficiency in body fluids (moisture that nourishes the body). The reason it keeps coming back even after brushing it off is that the root cause lies within the stomach and intestines.
From a Western medical perspective, a diet high in carbohydrates and fats increases the viscosity of gastric juice, making digestion take longer. When combined with coldness or autonomic nervous system imbalances, stomach function declines even further.
Things you can do starting today to clean your gastric juice
Create time to keep your stomach empty
Time spent on an empty stomach is crucial for the stomach to repair its damaged inner lining. Feeling "hungry" is not a sign to panic, but a sign that your stomach is working hard. Try to reduce snacking and consciously create time to let your stomach rest.
Change what, how much, and when you eat
To balance your stomach acid, try to be mindful of the following three things.
Reduce the amount you eat: Aim for 80% full to leave some room in your stomach
Choose easy-to-digest ingredients: Ingredients with a viscous texture, such as mountain yam and okra, reduce the burden on the stomach
Eat earlier: Eating late at night is a common cause of stomach heaviness. Ideally, finish your meal before 8:00 PM
Massage in the bath is also effective
While soaking in the bathtub, try incorporating the habit of gently massaging the area around your solar plexus in a clockwise direction. By warming your body and promoting blood flow to the gastrointestinal tract, you can support the recovery of digestive function.
Medicinal recipes
May medicinal recipe: Mountain yam and fava bean egg scramble
A dish that combines fava beans, which are in season in May, with mountain yam to regulate the gastrointestinal tract.
Ingredients (for 2 people)
Mountain yam: 150g
Fava beans: about 15 beans (removed from pods)
Eggs: 2
Salt: a pinch
Sesame oil: 1 teaspoon
Ground white sesame seeds: 1 tablespoon
Instructions
Remove the fava beans from their pods and boil them in salted boiling water for 3 minutes. Once they have cooled slightly, peel off the thin skins.
Beat the eggs, add a pinch of salt, and mix well. Heat the sesame oil in a frying pan, pour in the eggs to make fluffy scrambled eggs, and let them cool.
Peel the mountain yam and cut it into bite-sized pieces. Alternatively, cut it into strips to take advantage of its viscosity.
Place the mountain yam, fava beans, and scrambled eggs in a bowl, add white ground sesame seeds, and toss gently.
Medicinal points
Mountain yam: An ingredient that nourishes the digestive system and generates body fluids. Its viscous components protect the stomach lining and facilitate smooth digestion.
Fava beans: In season in May. They help digestive function and have the effect of draining excess moisture. Recommended for times when you are concerned about swelling.
Eggs: An ingredient that is easy to digest and provides protein without putting a strain on the digestive system.
Summary
Tongue coating is not a problem with the tongue itself, but is caused by the state of gastric juices
Before using a tongue brush, it is important to create time to let the stomach empty
Incorporate ingredients that support digestion, such as mountain yam and fava beans, into your daily diet
It is not the illness that is scary, but the lack of knowledge. Do not ignore the small sign that is tongue coating; try listening to your body's voice. Balancing your digestive system is the foundation of building health.
