[Evening Piano in Yokohama.] "What if I can't make it due to work?"—As an instructor, I will answer that anxiety honestly!
I want to start learning piano after work at night, but I'm worried about what happens if I can't make it due to a sudden commitment...
Daiki Sakurai, an instructor at the Yokohama Piano School, answers this realistic concern of working professionals honestly.
What is the reality of the makeup lesson system, and what is the surprising way to utilize two consecutive lessons?
Things everyone is concerned about before starting piano
"I'm interested in the Yokohama Piano School, but may I ask you one thing?"
This is how people who come for trial lessons sometimes start the conversation.
The words that follow are usually the same.
"...What happens if I suddenly can't make it because of work?"
This is a question I am asked very often.
Having been a salaryman myself, I understand that feeling very well.
For working professionals planning to attend after work, the anxiety of "what if I suddenly have to work overtime" or "what if I have a sudden business trip" is on their minds even before they start taking lessons.
They don't want to join without knowing the rules and then think, "This isn't what I expected." I believe this question comes from that sincere feeling.
So this time, I will write everything honestly about the makeup and cancellation policies at the Yokohama Piano School.
First, starting with the conclusion
There is no point in beating around the bush, so I will say it first.
At the Yokohama Piano School, we do not accept cancellations for lessons once they have been booked, in principle.
If you thought, "That's strict after all," please read a little further.
There is a reason for this rule. And rather than a "strict rule," I think of it as a "system to help you keep going."
The option of a "makeup lesson" instead of cancellation
At the Yokohama Piano School, when it becomes inconvenient for you to attend, we handle it with makeup lessons.
When it looks like you won't be able to make it due to work, please first contact us via our official LINE. We will coordinate a different schedule together. In principle, we ask that makeup lessons be taken within the same month.
The important thing is not to leave it as "I couldn't make it."
If you are absent without notice, you will be charged as if the lesson had taken place. This is something I want to make clear from the start.
Conversely, if you just send a quick message saying you can't make it, we can figure things out together from there. I don't want to bind you with rules; I want to value our communication.
Rescheduling can sometimes lead to an unexpectedly "great lesson"
Let me share a story about something that actually happened.
Recently, a student contacted me to reschedule a lesson due to family circumstances. While adjusting the schedule, we decided to "put the rescheduled lesson and the regular lesson back-to-back," which resulted in two consecutive lesson slots.
Afterward, I received this feedback from the student:
"With one slot, I always run out of time, but with two slots, I had enough time to practice thoroughly during the lesson and get feedback on the fine details, which was actually better!"
Hearing this, I was struck by a realization.
Even for those who find it difficult to attend every week, by booking two consecutive slots, you can experience a depth of lesson that one slot cannot reach. It was a moment where a new form of lesson was born from a rescheduling request.
A "week I couldn't make it" doesn't have to be a negative; it can be turned into an option to "combine them into one intensive lesson." Knowing this might make the conversation about rescheduling feel a little easier.
I will tell you the honest truth about why I have a "no cancellation" policy
I will be honest.
A classroom with an atmosphere where "it's okay to cancel" often doesn't last.
This is something I have felt throughout my long experience teaching.
Even if you are motivated at first, when work gets busy, "maybe I'll skip this week" becomes a habit. Before you know it, you've missed a month, you start to feel distant, and you end up quitting—.
Piano is a skill that requires a certain amount of "consistency." Making time to move your body, produce sound, and touch music even once a week. That is what builds up over time.
I believe that a system where you think "I'll go on a different day" instead of "I want to take a break" is the key to continuing.
I don't want to set strict rules; I just want you to keep going—that is the honest truth.
Regarding cancellations by the instructor
Of course, this is a different story if I, the instructor, have to cancel a lesson.
In that case, I will always accommodate you with a makeup lesson or a refund. I promise to take responsibility to ensure that students do not suffer any disadvantage.
Even after 9:00 PM, in a way that is easy to visit
The business hours of the Yokohama Piano School are 1:00 PM to 12:00 AM.
The fact that we offer lessons after 9:00 PM is an expression of my desire for you to come at a time that is convenient for you. I want to be a place where even those with a lot of overtime can come straight from work.
The nearest stations are Kannai Station and Isezakichojamachi Station. It is a place you can visit as if you were making a small detour on your way home from work.
By having a makeup system, you can create a rhythm of "This week was difficult, so let's reschedule for another day." I believe that accumulating these small choices is a realistic way for working adults to continue playing the piano.
Of course, we also support online lessons!
Please feel free to contact us!

You are welcome to come just to "ask about the rules."
