Why I Don't Promote the After-School Writing Club

Hello, I'm Yasu, and I was surprised when someone said on an audio stream, "Yasu-san! Why are you playing it cool when you're supposed to be promoting your salon!"

It's not that I'm bad at marketing or sales. I just want people who are serious about wanting to play with writing to join. It's a difficult balance.

Our online salon, the "After-School Writing Club," is a writing salon where we continue to learn how to write and what makes writing interesting. However, it is not a place to learn writing in a one-sided, passive way.

If you come in thinking, "Yay, Yasu-san, I've joined! Please teach me about writing!" you are bound to be surprised.

I haven't set it up as a system where I am the teacher and the members are the students, or where I am the instructor and the members are the attendees. There is no hierarchy. The members call me their mentor, but my role is simply that of a leader.

I want to write. I want to truly express myself through words.(I like the phrase "truly express.")

It's more like a place that gives a push to people like that. A relationship where, when you write something, everyone cheers you on by saying, "Oh, that's good." And if it's not good, we point it out directly, saying, "Hmm, that's a bit lackluster." Since harsh criticism can be a heavy burden for members, I mainly handle that part.

If I only wanted to satisfy the desire for learning, I could just keep outputting a lot of knowledge about writing. "I heard something good," "What was the writing I've been doing until now?," "My brain is rejoicing at this new knowledge."

People have a thirst for knowledge. We feel pleasure in acquiring new information.

That's why some people go to lectures and seminars to learn information they didn't know before. Because it feels good. They don't necessarily want to learn the knowledge to take action; they just want to know. I think that's fine.

But writing knowledge shouldn't end there. It's absurd to think it's only for satisfying a thirst for knowledge.

Just as self-help books say, "Take action!," if you don't write, your knowledge will go to waste. Even though you're supposed to be learning in order to write, it's a bit much if the learning becomes the main focus, right?

In our online salon, we recommend that you share your work externally as much as possible. By "externally," I mean things like blogs, note, or entering writing contests.

"No one will read what I write anyway..."
"But I'm scared of getting flamed."
"I can't keep it up."
"Winning an award is just a pipe dream."

...Is that so? Are you really sure about that?

Let our salon prove it to the world.

We will overcome one thing at a time and create a world where writing is fun.

Self-expression. It's not about sharing someone else's knowledge, know-how, or stories; members who have started expressing themselves are already making waves in a new world. Come join us.
