【Summer Vacation Diary Day 9】


In the writing community I belong to, the 'After-School Writing Club,' we are holding an event where everyone writes a summer vacation diary. Today is day 9.


Mondays are the days for the 'ogiri' (comedy prompt) event at the writing club I belong to. I provide the prompt and the members provide the punchlines; it's a little exercise in shifting perspectives. After all, a unique perspective is a charm when writing articles.


Coming up with prompts is incredibly difficult. If I don't make them easy for everyone to answer and easy to make jokes about, it won't be lively. Thanks to that, perhaps because it's easy to participate in, Mondays are more boisterous than the writing workshops.

How many of these people are writing lies?


Well, 'lies' might be a bit harsh. Maybe 'not writing the truth'?


Nobody writes a diary saying, 'Last night I was cuddling in bed with my lover (or partner, or affair partner).' Well, obviously.


I see it occasionally, and I often see pickup-artist-style diaries (wait, why am I reading those?), but well, people don't write that. There's also no mention of going to nightlife establishments. Or host clubs. They don't write it. Or rather, they can't.


Some write about having happy days every day, while their relationship with their partner is actually not that great. That's a harsh thing to say.


Things like, 'Last night after work, I went on an affair date with someone from work. We ran out of condoms, so we stopped at a drugstore to buy some before meeting up,' are things that, even if they really happened, would never be put in an article. It would be a huge scandal. ...Why are all my examples about bad romantic situations?


We only write what we can write. We only publish articles that are safe to publish.


People who write interesting articles attack this point exquisitely. The non-professional note writers and essayists I know. Those who write attractive articles write about their private lives right up to the limit. To the point where I worry, 'Hey, are you really okay writing that much?'


Interesting people write interestingly by opening up (within the limit) about their naked complexes, embarrassing stories, failures, pathetic tales, self-deprecation, and things they would be ashamed for others to know.


As the saying goes, 'People are respected for their strengths and loved for their weaknesses,' people are loved for their pathetic parts and their hopelessly human sides.


How do you bring that out? You write within the range of the truth without lying. You push the envelope a little, just enough not to cause a scandal or discomfort.


Everyone who writes has a desire to be 'seen in a certain way,' and they write to be perceived that way. Just by writing without lying, you can stand out a head above the rest of the crowd.


Stand out. Let's stand out. (Within the range of what you can show, that is.)
