I Gave Up on Literary Talent

Last night, on salon member Arkun's Stand.fm audio broadcast, I held a short version of my writing course, the "Popular Writing Course." Thank you to everyone who listened. I'm happy about the high ratings.


I am not a professional author, nor am I a writer. But through mysterious connections, I interact with various authors, professional editors, and influencers. My luck with meeting people is, honestly, outrageous.


I myself cannot write the kind of transcendentally beautiful prose that professionals do. My grammar and style are a mess. Yes, I know.


In fact, the author Kotaro Hisui tells me, "Yasu, your writing isn't particularly good, but you have more dedication, passion, honesty, and a desire to entertain people than anyone else." ...I don't need the official stamp of approval that I'm not good!


I love interesting writing, I want to read it, and I want to write such prose myself, so I've learned a lot by imitating others, asking for advice from those who are good at writing, reading books, and joining other salons and communities.


There are many people in the world who have a sense for writing.


It's just that many of those people are buried. If you just changed how they write ever so slightly, they should pop! and take off.


So, instead of just learning to write good prose myself, if I share that knowledge, wouldn't the writing level of the people around me go up like... parara-la-la-la? Like defeating a Metal Slime.


I, too, get influenced by the people around me who have improved their writing skills, feel jealous, and think, "Damn it! I'm going to write an even more interesting article!"


The writing salon "After-School Writing Club" is a place where we elevate each other and play with writing to the fullest.


It's not a rigid writing school. We do play with writing seriously, though. Like the Senden Kaigi Award. We do it seriously, but fundamentally we are having fun. Like, "This isn't work, take it seriously!"


Most members joined while hesitating, thinking, "I'm not good at writing... I feel like I'm not worthy..." Well, maybe the reason it's hard to join is because I'm wearing a Hyottoko mask!


This spring, my mindset changed quite a bit.


Honestly, there is a part of me that thinks, "I want to become famous and shine!" It's embarrassing to admit. It's a desire for approval, right? It exists, doesn't it?


Really, maybe it was since entering March. I started to think strongly, "I want to make the members shine even more. I want to drag them out onto the main stage...!"


Is it because of spring? I want to pursue the role of a producer more. Even though I'm a behind-the-scenes person who likes to be in front and talkative. Aim to be the Yasushi Akimoto of writing. Yasushi Yasu. It's autumn even though it's spring.


Even when I'm editing members' writing, I try to polish and make it shine without erasing their individuality, as if I were handling fragile jewels. That's the feeling I have when I face it.


If you shine, I shine.
If you are happy, I am happy.
If you laugh, I can smile.


...Oh? Huh? Maybe I'm returning to the love and popularity theory I wrote a long time ago. It really is "Popular Writing" after all.


Even if you aren't a handsome guy (professional prose), let's prove that you can be popular (read).
