In Memory of an Underprivileged Genius

Love is first-class, writing is second-class, looks are third-class. A genius who is only popular with the ladies, I am Yasu, hello.


This is a phrase I used to use for self-introductions. That's right. It's a complete rip-off of Ryutaro Kamioka.

I have been influenced by this person's way of speaking and thinking. I don't often mention that I'm a fan because he is my source material, and I didn't want to spoil the source.


He retired in 2000, so I wonder if my generation, in our 40s, is the last to really know Ryutaro Kamioka. What about those in their 30s?


He was a former TV personality who was immensely popular in the Kansai region. He was the first director of Knight Scoop. (The second was Toshiyuki Nishida, and the current one, Hitoshi Matsumoto, is the third.)


He retired from the entertainment industry in 2000, leaving behind the words, “My art is only good for the 20th century.” It is praised as a brilliant exit.


I really think Kamioka-san was smart. 2000 was around the time the internet started to become quite widespread. I suppose it was the era when 2channel was in full swing.


His son described Kamioka-san as someone who “never showed weakness, acted cool, and was all talk.” (As expected of his son, the rhythm of the sentence is good.)


Because he would say, “I’m an entertainer,” and his talk was sharp and biting, I think he would have been constantly flamed in the internet age for people taking his words out of context. “Why would you take what an entertainer says seriously?” doesn't really work nowadays.


He was an avid reader and very intelligent, so his talk was convincing, but when you think about it, you go, “Hmm?” He was suited for television, where words disappear on the spot. It would be bad if his talk remained.


Papepo TV, where he did a two-man talk show with Tsurube Shofukutei, was truly interesting. It was a program where the smart Kamioka-san and the foolish Tsurube-san (that was their positioning) just chatted. Yes, it is still being carried on today. The two-man talk between the smart Tsurube-san and the foolish Naomi Matsushima, Kira Kira Afro, is in that lineage.


Ryutaro Kamioka said that interesting television is when amateurs show their art, and professionals show their private lives.


Now that YouTube has become similar to television, if we apply Kamioka-san's theory of television, it certainly seems to hold true.


Streamers who aren't popular yet are showing their art. Like interesting videos. Once they become popular, they show their private lives.


He implicitly says that doing the opposite is boring. “Amateurs showing their private lives.”
