The First Summer Tournament Wasn’t at Koshien

On August 18, 1915, Japan’s first National Middle School Baseball Championship opened at Toyonaka Ground in Osaka. Ten schools took part, and cloth hung from ropes served as an outfield fence.

The Zen phrase Zenkigen means bringing your whole being into the present moment. Even without a perfect stage, the players gave everything to each pitch—and began a summer story that has continued for more than a century.
