Pigeon calls are 1.9 billion
Since this morning,
a pigeon has been cooing in the garden.
Is it planning to build a nest or something?
With a peaceful voice,
it is calling incessantly.
Ah,
the pigeon's call is
almost noisy!
To everyone else,
what does it sound like?
Crows go caw-caw,
sparrows go chirp-chirp,
nightingales go ho-ho-kekyo,
and cuckoos go cuckoo.
So, what about pigeons?
Po-po-po?
Coo-coo?
To me...

Back when my grandfather (my father)
was not yet
a grandfather, but just a middle-aged man.
He told my younger self,
The pigeon is
calling out 'exactly 1.9 billion',
he said.
My younger self
thought, what on earth is that,
but even so,
when I listened with that in mind,
I thought, perhaps it really is...
and I strained my heart and ears.
And,
once it sounds like that,
it is a strange thing,
but no matter where or what kind of pigeon I meet,
ju-kyu-oku-chodo-
ju-kyu-oku-chodo-
is what I started to hear.
Even when I explain it to people,
they rarely empathize with me.
To everyone else,
it seems to sound like
de-de-po-po-po.
My father is
a bureaucrat.
To think I'd mishear it as "exactly 1.9 billion"—
what on earth
could my father's connection to 1.9 billion be...?
I'm very worried, but
ever since then, I too
have started hearing
"exactly 1.9 billion."
Could it be that
without even knowing it,
I also
have some connection to 1.9 billion...?
This morning, too, in the garden, it's chirping away,
"1.9 billion exactly,"
"1.9 billion exactly."
it keeps calling.
