📺 I was watching "Lockerbie" on Netflix

It is a work depicting the Pan Am Flight 103 bombing that occurred in 1988.
Based on the actual incident where a passenger plane exploded over Lockerbie, Scotland, it depicts how the investigation proceeded, resulting in the loss of 270 lives.
It was while I was watching such a suspenseful story. "Wait? I've seen this place before." Stone buildings reflected on the screen. Strong sunlight. Honey-colored streets. It was Malta, which I had visited alone on a trip before.

🕍Malta was an important location in the story

There is a deep connection between the Pan Am Flight 103 incident and Malta. During the investigation, Malta emerged in the investigation line regarding the suitcase and clothing that were believed to have contained the bomb.
In the BBC drama "The Bombing of Pan Am 103" distributed on Netflix, the investigation extends not only to Scotland but also to the United States and Malta.
And this work was actually filmed in Malta. When I looked it up, the area around Valletta, where I had traveled, was also a filming location.

🏰 Valletta's "Grand Master's Palace"

One of the filming locations is the Grand Master's Palace in Valletta, the capital of Malta.
It is a historic building dating back to the 16th century, a place that conveys the era of the Knights of St. John to the present day.
In the drama, it is used as a filming location to represent a different government office building.
When I was watching it on Netflix, I was absorbed in following the story, but after looking up the filming locations later, I was happy to think, "It really was Malta after all."
A place you have traveled to suddenly appears in a movie or drama.
This might be a small reward for a journey that only those who have actually walked that land can experience.

🏝️ Another filming location, Birgu

Furthermore, filming also took place in Birgu, on the opposite shore of Valletta.
It is one of the Three Cities, also known as Vittoriosa.
It is reported that the Old Armoury, a historic building here, was used as a Maltese police facility in the drama.
Although Malta is a small island nation, when you walk around, you can see that a long history remains everywhere in the city. Stone buildings. Narrow alleys. The wind blowing from the sea.
And, no matter where you look, the scenery is like a movie set. That is probably why it becomes a filming location for many movies and dramas.

When I traveled to Malta, I never thought that a few years later, while watching Netflix, there would come a day when I would think, "I've been here!"
When we talk about travel, we tend to think of only the time spent on an airplane or walking around the local area as "travel."
But perhaps that is not actually the case.

When you watch a movie after returning home. When you read the news. When you learn about history. Past memories and new knowledge connect, such as "That place was this kind of place." At that moment, the journey that should have ended begins once again. Watching "Lockerbie" this time, my journey in Malta also began to continue a little bit.

In the drama, it starts from the beautiful filming locations in Malta and finally returns the perspective to Lockerbie.

And what was depicted against the backdrop of the beautiful streets of Malta was not Malta as a tourist destination, but the story of people pursuing the truth of an incident that took 270 lives—.
If I ever go to Malta again, next time I would like to walk around Valletta and Birgu not just by seeing them as "beautiful cities," but also by paying attention to the history and stories that those places hold.
Re-learning about the places you have traveled to later. I think this is also one of the ways to enjoy traveling.
