🌞 [Mental Training] What is mental training, anyway?

This is YUKI from the Bishin Body Method 🌷

In this post, I would like to share the common perception of mental training and what I personally think it is 💡

If you cannot imagine something at this moment, you cannot reproduce it. I explain this in detail in this article, so please take a look if you have time.

So, what is mental training, anyway? I would like to share my own thoughts on this 🧠

When you hear the term "mental training," what is the first thing that comes to mind? 🧐

“An athlete repeatedly simulating a match or competition scene in their head” ⚟

That might be it.

For example, a baseball player imagining the moment they hit a home run, or a track athlete picturing the sensation of a starting dash 🏃.

You might have a strong impression of it as a “technique for success in sports.”

However, as a personal trainer facing my clients, I strongly feel that,

“Mental training is not just for athletes.”

That is the case 💡

Rather, it is a method anyone can use that also demonstrates great power in achieving goals for dieting, body makeup, and daily work.

And the concept I value is

“Mental training = Goal setting”

It is not just mere imagination; by concretely depicting your future self, your daily actions and choices naturally align toward that future.
I believe this is the essence of mental training.

What is mental training?

In a nutshell, mental training is

“experiencing your ideal self in your mind in advance.” Just thinking “I want to lose weight” makes it hard to take action, doesn't it?

But what if you pictured yourself “three months from now, with a toned waist, wearing your favorite dress, and spending time smiling at a cafe with friends”? 🧐
In that moment, the mere wish of “I want to lose weight” turns into a concrete goal 💡

To your brain, it is not just a fantasy, but is recorded as an “event that will happen in the near future” 🌌

Why mental training becomes goal setting

It is said that the human brain cannot distinguish between “what actually happened” and “what was vividly imagined” 🧠

It is the same as how your mouth waters just by imagining a lemon and thinking “sour.”
Images in your head create real reactions in your body and mind 🍋

That is why when you imagine your “future self,” your brain recognizes it as “something close to reality.”

As a result, you become more likely to unconsciously choose actions that lead toward that future ☝

The importance of concretely depicting your future self

When depicting your future self, “concreteness” is important.

• Instead of “I want to lose weight,” try “I want to lose another 5kg and go on a trip in the summer wearing a sleeveless dress” 🩱

• Instead of “I want to be healthy,” try “I want to wake up feeling refreshed in the morning and commute with a light step” 🚶

• Instead of “I want to build muscle,” try “I want to look at myself in the mirror with pride” 💪

With such realistic images, the feeling of wanting to meet your future self will well up 🌞

A good personal trainer provides goal setting

In reality, many people have not “clearly defined their own goals.”
When training individually at a sports club or similar, the thing people get most lost on is,

“load setting.” Isn't that right?

You know how to use the machines. But how many kilos? How many reps? How many sets?
Isn't this the biggest point of concern? 🧐

That is where we personal trainers come in✹

We draw out the vague desires our clients have and present them as a concrete future vision with clear numerical goals.

We set clear goals,

“If you do this, your body will definitely change! Wouldn't you like to meet that future version of yourself?”

we ask.

Through this, the client's goal changes from“a mere wish”into“a force that drives action”toward their goal✹

Excitement creates motivation

When you visualize your future self, your heart naturally starts to get excited, doesn't it?💖
This sense of excitement is the source of motivation.

From “I have to do it” to “I want to try it.”
The moment your mindset changes, training stops being an obligation and becomes something you enjoy.

On the other hand, if you start with vague goals, you are more likely to give up along the way.

Just saying “I want to lose weight” often leads to thinking “I guess this is enough” even when you are working hard😅

Without a vision of the future, you lose sight of the reason to keep going.

Among the clients I have worked with so far, those with a clear future vision have a higher success rate.

One person who imagined “wearing my favorite dress to a wedding in six months” stayed consistent with both diet and training, and achieved great results.

It was impressive to see how much more they enjoyed the process compared to those who just said they wanted to lose weight🌞

Visualization training fosters the power to continue

The biggest key to training is “consistency.”
And what supports that consistency is visualization training✹

By picturing your future self, you start to find meaning even in small changes.
If you can think “This is proof that I’m getting closer to my ideal self!” even after losing just one kilogram, your hard work turns into joy.

Summary

Visualization training is about concretely picturing your future self and setting goals while feeling excited.
A good personal trainer is someone who will draw that future vision with you and present it to you.

When you visualize your future self,

a feeling of “I want to meet them!” is born, which becomes the power to change your actions🌞
