So, what is mental training, anyway? I would like to share my own thoughts on this ð§
When you hear the term "mental training," what is the first thing that comes to mind? ð§
âAn athlete repeatedly simulating a match or competition scene in their headâ âŸ
That might be it.
For example, a baseball player imagining the moment they hit a home run, or a track athlete picturing the sensation of a starting dash ð.
You might have a strong impression of it as a âtechnique for success in sports.â
However, as a personal trainer facing my clients, I strongly feel that,
âMental training is not just for athletes.â
That is the case ð¡
Rather, it is a method anyone can use that also demonstrates great power in achieving goals for dieting, body makeup, and daily work.
And the concept I value is
âMental training = Goal settingâ
It is not just mere imagination; by concretely depicting your future self, your daily actions and choices naturally align toward that future.
I believe this is the essence of mental training.

What is mental training?
In a nutshell, mental training is
âexperiencing your ideal self in your mind in advance.â Just thinking âI want to lose weightâ makes it hard to take action, doesn't it?
But what if you pictured yourself âthree months from now, with a toned waist, wearing your favorite dress, and spending time smiling at a cafe with friendsâ? ð§
In that moment, the mere wish of âI want to lose weightâ turns into a concrete goal ð¡
To your brain, it is not just a fantasy, but is recorded as an âevent that will happen in the near futureâ ðŒ

Why mental training becomes goal setting
It is said that the human brain cannot distinguish between âwhat actually happenedâ and âwhat was vividly imaginedâ ð§
It is the same as how your mouth waters just by imagining a lemon and thinking âsour.â
Images in your head create real reactions in your body and mind ð
That is why when you imagine your âfuture self,â your brain recognizes it as âsomething close to reality.â
As a result, you become more likely to unconsciously choose actions that lead toward that future âïž

The importance of concretely depicting your future self
When depicting your future self, âconcretenessâ is important.
⢠Instead of âI want to lose weight,â try âI want to lose another 5kg and go on a trip in the summer wearing a sleeveless dressâ ð©±
⢠Instead of âI want to be healthy,â try âI want to wake up feeling refreshed in the morning and commute with a light stepâ ð¶
⢠Instead of âI want to build muscle,â try âI want to look at myself in the mirror with prideâ ðª
With such realistic images, the feeling of wanting to meet your future self will well up ðž

A good personal trainer provides goal setting
In reality, many people have not âclearly defined their own goals.â
When training individually at a sports club or similar, the thing people get most lost on is,
âload setting.â Isn't that right?
You know how to use the machines. But how many kilos? How many reps? How many sets?
Isn't this the biggest point of concern? ð§
That is where we personal trainers come inâš
We draw out the vague desires our clients have and present them as a concrete future vision with clear numerical goals.
We set clear goals,
âIf you do this, your body will definitely change! Wouldn't you like to meet that future version of yourself?â
we ask.
Through this, the client's goal changes fromâa mere wishâintoâa force that drives actionâtoward their goalâš

Excitement creates motivation
When you visualize your future self, your heart naturally starts to get excited, doesn't it?ð
This sense of excitement is the source of motivation.
From âI have to do itâ to âI want to try it.â
The moment your mindset changes, training stops being an obligation and becomes something you enjoy.
On the other hand, if you start with vague goals, you are more likely to give up along the way.
Just saying âI want to lose weightâ often leads to thinking âI guess this is enoughâ even when you are working hardð
Without a vision of the future, you lose sight of the reason to keep going.
Among the clients I have worked with so far, those with a clear future vision have a higher success rate.
One person who imagined âwearing my favorite dress to a wedding in six monthsâ stayed consistent with both diet and training, and achieved great results.
It was impressive to see how much more they enjoyed the process compared to those who just said they wanted to lose weightðž

Visualization training fosters the power to continue
The biggest key to training is âconsistency.â
And what supports that consistency is visualization trainingâš
By picturing your future self, you start to find meaning even in small changes.
If you can think âThis is proof that Iâm getting closer to my ideal self!â even after losing just one kilogram, your hard work turns into joy.

Summary
Visualization training is about concretely picturing your future self and setting goals while feeling excited.
A good personal trainer is someone who will draw that future vision with you and present it to you.
When you visualize your future self,
a feeling of âI want to meet them!â is born, which becomes the power to change your actionsðž
