New Frontiers in Creativity Expanded by AI Image Generation
Hello, this is Towa-san!
Recently, the term "AI image generation" has been heard much more frequently in design and creative fields.
Until the beginning of this year, I was also skeptical, thinking, "AI creating images? It can't be anything that great, right?" but once I actually tried it, I felt possibilities beyond my imagination.
Today, I would like to delve into the new creative world brought about by this "AI image generation," starting from the basics.
What is AI image generation in the first place?
Simply put, it is a technology that automatically creates images based on your vision when you give the AI instructions (prompts) in text, such as "I want an image like this."
For example, just by conveying it in words, such as "a small wooden house standing in a quiet forest" or "a futuristic night view of Tokyo," the AI constructs the image on the spot.
A completely new option has been added to the creative world, where previously you had no choice but to draw it yourself, take a photo, or search for stock materials.
Why is it so exciting?
One of the reasons I got hooked on AI image generation lies in its "speed" and "diversity."
Normally, visualizing a specific image would take time and cost, such as commissioning an illustrator or finding a photographer.
With AI, you can get candidate images in seconds to minutes, so you can keep testing ideas.
Furthermore, the AI is more creative than expected, and sometimes returns results that are surprising, making you think, "So that's how you interpret it!"
It is not uncommon for elements I hadn't thought of myself to be incorporated, or for new ideas to be born from a little bit of coincidence.
Of course, until about half a year ago, image generation often had unintended suggestions, such as six fingers or, when asked for a Japanese style, things like kimonos or topknots that made you wonder, "What era is this?"
The choice of words in the prompt is key
What is interesting about AI image generation is that the design changes with "words."
For example, with the prompt "a fantastic forest" versus "a mysterious, dimly lit forest with light streaming in," the images output by the AI will have completely different atmospheres.
In other words, you don't need to draw pictures or provide sample images to instruct the design; you can control the creative process using only "linguistic expression."
This is a major appeal that allows not only designers but also people who work with words, such as copywriters, planners, and people in many other professions, to participate intuitively. Anyone can potentially create wonderful images if they practice a little bit.
The hurdles for creativity are lowered
Thanks to AI image generation, I feel that the hurdles of "I can't draw" or "I don't have shooting equipment" have been significantly lowered.
Of course, works created by professional illustrators and photographers have a human touch and intentional beauty that will continue to be respected in the future.
However, it is very good that AI can play an active role as a support tool in the initial stages, such as daily brainstorming, concept proposals, and creating image boards.
By visualizing ideas before commissioning a professional, you can communicate more smoothly.
Possibilities Expanding into Business
What I am particularly focused on is its application in business.
For example, you can easily prepare visuals for social media posts, create catalog-style images just by describing your brand image in words, or express unique worldviews tailored for overseas promotions.
Depending on your ideas, it can be applied to any scene.
Moreover, it is possible to enhance originality by further processing or combining generated images with AI.
At this point, we can say that the era of creating content through a 'three-legged race between AI and humans' has truly begun.
Points of Concern
There are also some points of concern regarding AI image generation.
Ethical issues exist, such as copyright and licensing problems, transparency regarding what kind of images the source datasets have learned from, and the possibility of discriminatory expressions appearing.
To address these issues, both tool providers and users are required to be conscious of creating rules and promoting healthy usage.
Still, the Evolution of Technology Does Not Stop
Despite these concerns, technology is evolving rapidly, and AI image generation models with higher resolution and more accurate expressive power are appearing one after another.
In the future, further expansions such as long-form video, 3D model generation, and real-time interactive content creation can be expected.
In the future, creativity may become dominated by a hybrid style where AI and humans leverage each other's strengths.
Giving instructions in words, humans making fine adjustments, and AI expanding ideas... new forms of expression and business models will likely be born from such a flow.
Summary
AI image generation is beginning to draw a new timeline in the world of creativity.
The initial image creation and brainstorming that used to take time and cost are now speeding up, and because design can be controlled through words, people with skills other than design can now enter the field.
Of course, there are challenges, but that is inherent in the stage where new technology spreads.
As ethical issues and licensing are sorted out, a healthier creative environment should be established.
I intend to coexist with these new tools and utilize them to polish my own creative skills.
The new frontier expanded by AI image generation... it is filled with the excitement of opening the door to a world yet unseen.
I hope you all will try out this new technology and find your own ways to use it!
See you next time.
