The 'Like' on note is a finite asset. The one and only reason I decided to organize my follows
I realized it was no longer possible to read through all the new articles in my 'Following' feed and send a heartfelt 'Like' to each one.
This article is a complete record of the thinking process that led me to decide to 'organize my follows'.
By the time you finish reading, you will likely have redefined the value of your own act of 'Liking.' This is a thought experiment intended to help you fundamentally rethink your relationships on note.
Your 'Like' is a 'limited and precious resource' that everyone possesses.
The reason I took the step to organize my follows is very simple.
It is because the 'Like' on note is a very precious thing with a limit on how many you can send. Sending this precious resource indiscriminately does not benefit anyone.
I decided that I want to prioritize delivering this precious 'Like' to the people who always send me a 'Like.' This is not a story about cutting off human relationships. It is my own way of focusing my limited feelings of support on the relationships that are truly important.
Why does good intention alone, wanting to 'support everyone,' end up failing?
I used to decide to send a 'Like' to the articles of everyone I followed as much as possible.
This was based on the modest expectation that 'if I support them, maybe they will support me back someday.' However, this method became unsustainable as my number of followers increased.
Time is limited, and the number of 'Likes' is also limited. If you try to support everyone equally, your feelings of support for each individual inevitably become diluted. As a result, your 'Like' becomes nothing more than a chore, devoid of heart.
The concrete mechanism I devised for 'gratitude to circulate'
To solve this problem, I thought of a mechanism.
First, I created an email address specifically for note and linked it to a spreadsheet. This is to automatically record 'who gave a Like, when, and how many times.'
Next, based on the records from the last month, I created a 'list of people who sent me a Like.'
If I look at this list, I can immediately tell who is still interacting with me. Based on that list, I quietly unfollowed those with whom I no longer have any interaction. Then, I use the time and 'Likes' I gained to go and deliver my feelings of gratitude to the people on the list.
My thoughts on 'quiet fans'
I am sure some will say, 'But aren't there fans who don't leave likes but are still quietly supporting you?'
My stance on this is clear.
What those people are truly seeking is not a follow from me. What they are waiting for is the next new article I write.
I want to live up to that trust through the quality of the articles themselves. I have come to terms with the fact that follow relationships are, at the end of the day, just connections with peers within the note platform.
Where will you send your 'precious support'?
Some of you may have felt a little sad reading this article. However, this is my own answer to trying to be sincere within a limited amount of time.
To whom, why, and how will you send your precious support?
Perhaps the time has come for you to 'rethink' how you engage with your own note.
