📚Tsumidemic
Good evening, this is Tona-Kae.
The cover is absolutely wonderful.
I listened to it as an audiobook.
It was incredibly interesting.
It's not a series of linked short stories, but a short story collection.
Each story is independent.
Yuto, a college dropout, works a part-time job touting for customers in the nightlife district.
One day, a woman speaking in an Osaka dialect approached him while he was working,
and she gave the name of a classmate who should have died back in junior high school, but—
—"Birds of a Different Feather"
Kyoichi is unemployed and tends to stay cooped up at home.
One day, when his first-grade son, Hayato, returned from playing,
he had an old 10,000-yen bill with Prince Shotoku on it.
Kyoichi used it for cigarette money, having been told it was given to him by an old man living in a nearby house, but—
—"Special Beneficiary"
A collection of 6 vivid "crime" stories
The titles of the 6 stories are:
1. Birds of a Different Feather
2. Romance☆
3. Phosphorescence
4. Special Beneficiary
5. Song of Blessing
6. Ripple Drive
The obi strip said "Pandemic x Crime," so
I thought they would all be murder cases from the "perpetrator's perspective," but
that wasn't really the case.
Since each story has a slightly different flavor,
it seems like people's opinions on which ones they like or dislike will vary wildly.
They are all stories set during the COVID-19 pandemic.
I wasn't really feeling the first one, so
I thought about stopping halfway through, but
I liked the feel of 2, 3, 4, and 5,
so I was able to finish it all the way to the end of 6.
1. Birds of a Different Feather
An eerie feeling
2. Romance☆
Perspective of a screw-loose criminal (though they seem like someone you could find nearby)
3. Phosphorescence
A crime that could actually happen
4. Special Beneficiary
Following the flow up to 3, I was anxious but
felt suspenseful halfway through,
praying, "Please let it end the way I like!!"
and in the end, I was relieved, thinking, "Thank goodness!!!"
The descriptions of the food make me hungry.
5. Song of Blessing
It feels like it just packed in all the modern issues of that genre.
I thought it was well-crafted and enjoyed it.
6. Ripple Drive
You can guess the punchline to some extent, but it was interesting.
A recommended book for when you want to read something quick.
The cover is beautiful and I'd been curious about it for a while, so
I'm glad I was able to read it.
Audible sometimes has a "99 yen/month trial" offer, so check it out.
