A Small Time Capsule Found While Tidying Up ー June 10, Wednesday , 2026 ー R8
Today, I was sorting through various papers in my room.
As I organized gym brochures, bus schedules for my driver's license renewal, medical referral letters, and other documents, I unexpectedly came across an old program booklet.
It was the program for the "Open House Concert" held in 1999 at Kato Gakuen Gyoshu Elementary School.
At that time, my daughter was in second grade and my son was in fifth grade.
The school had two programs, the Immersion Course and the Regular Course, and this concert was a school event where children from both programs performed together.
My daughter played "May Breeze," while my son performed the second movement of a Beethoven piano sonatina.
I listened to "May Breeze" on YouTube today. I cannot be certain that it was exactly the same piece my daughter played, but it brought back a warm feeling of nostalgia.
As the concert approached each year, the children practiced hard. Looking back, I probably encouraged them to practice quite a bit myself. I wanted them to do their best in front of an audience.
My son was the type who steadily continued whatever he started, and he stayed with piano for many years. My daughter also tried the Electone, but she was more the type to enjoy many different interests rather than stick with one thing for a long time.
While raising my children, I was also working full-time. Life was busy, and there was always somewhere to go, someone to pick up, or an event to attend. At the time, it simply felt like everyday life.
The children eventually grew up and left home. Even the self-playing piano we bought for them fulfilled its role and was later sold.
Yet today, after surviving several moves and many rounds of decluttering, this old program booklet appeared once again in my room in Matsuyama.
I may no longer remember the music itself, but I still remember the children they once were, and the busy yet meaningful days we shared as a family.
That single sheet of paper felt like a small time capsule, preserving a precious chapter of our lives.
