New Zealand Travel 100 Day 23 − 6
Today, I watched My Neighbor Totoro on Netflix. No matter how many times I see it, I never tire of this film. The natural interactions between sisters Satsuki and Mei, the kindness of their father, and their encounter with Totoro, the guardian of the forest, always warm my heart and expand the world of childhood in a magical way.
This movie has also given me many personal memories. My eldest grandchild loved this film in Japanese from the very beginning, often shouting, “Totoro, Totoro!” However, once he started attending preschool and living mostly in English, he wanted to watch Totoro in English. The second child, having grown up seeing his older brother watch it in English, naturally enjoyed it in English from the start. Eventually, the eldest child became fascinated with superhero and action shows, and Totoro gradually disappeared from daily life, but still remains in our hearts.
Watching it again on Netflix today brings back so many memories. It is a story that my family and I have all enjoyed together. I watch it now while hoping that one day my eldest grandchild (7), my second grandchild (5), and my youngest (10 months) can enjoy Totoro in Japanese once again.
My Neighbor Totoro is a timeless film that reminds us of family bonds, the pure hearts of children, and the small, magical moments in everyday life.
