What does it mean for parents to accept their child's disability?
Since the 'Totsu to Oku' collaborative magazine is calling for articles on 'accepting disabilities,' I would like to write down my thoughts on the matter.
The issue of parents accepting a disability is significant for both the child with the disability and the caregivers.
However, an even biggerproblem is that parents are often exposed to information suggesting that 'if you can't accept the disability, you are a bad parent,' causing their minds to understand while their hearts lag behind, leading them to believe they are failing by the measure of that gap.
I have seen many parents in various states.
Some parents have already accepted the situation and are looking forward from the time they first come to our center in nursery school.
Others, even when their children reach high school, still have not truly accepted it (what does true acceptance even mean?).
Watching these parents, I feel that
accepting a disability is not something youdobut rather something you
become able to doover time.
I believe there are various triggers for becoming able to do this, but what we as caregivers can provide is
the realization that 'even with a disability, a child grows, and even with a disability, there is light,'
and when that is felt in the heart, the parents' expressions seem to gradually change.
In this regard,it is the 'child' who causes the worry, but ultimately, it is also the 'child' who provides the trigger toovercome that part.
Therefore, parents, please look closely at your children; it is okay to worry when you need to worry, and it is okay to feel down when you compare them to others and feel discouraged... it may be tough, but that is perfectly fine.
After all, isn't that how it is?
You will feel pessimistic,
because your heart is honest.
But you are certainly not alone.
Connecting through this Note is one way to realize that.
Just like a child's development, acceptance cannot be achieved in a single leap.
That is why there are support staff and experienced mothers who will help you.
Please do not torment yourself.
Your child is precious, and they will surely show you a future.
