Beyond "Water Intake": "Water Retention" is the Key to Preventing Dehydration

We have been taught to "drink 2 liters of water a day." However, are there people who, no matter how much they drink, immediately feel the need to go to the bathroom or find that their skin remains dry? In fact, the key to preventing dehydration is not "how much you drink," but "how much you can retain in your body." As we age, this "water retention capacity" declines, and even if you drink the same amount, water no longer stays in the body as it did when you were younger.
One reason for this is the age-related decrease in muscle mass. Muscles act like a reservoir that stores about 70% of the body's water, but after the age of 60, this amount decreases year by year. In other words, when muscles decrease, the "water tank" inside your body becomes smaller. Therefore, even if you drink the same amount of water, it is quickly excreted as excess.
Furthermore, electrolyte balance is also important. Minerals such as sodium, potassium, and magnesium are essential for cells to attract and retain water. If you drink large amounts of plain water, the mineral concentration in your blood can become diluted, and the body may decide that it is dangerous to store any more water, causing it to be excreted as urine. To "retain" moisture, you need moderate amounts of salt and minerals.
That is why I recommend the habit of drinking "slowly, frequently, and savoring it." Adding a small amount of salt to hot water when you wake up in the morning, incorporating miso soup and simmered dishes into your meals, and supplementing moisture from fruits and vegetables—with these methods, water is not just something that passes through, but slowly soaks into every single cell of your body. In particular, foods with a water content of over 90%, such as cucumbers, watermelons, and daikon radishes, deliver moisture along with natural electrolytes.
And we cannot overlook the intestinal environment. Recent research has shown that the more abundant the good bacteria in the gut, the higher the efficiency of water and mineral absorption. By incorporating fermented foods into your daily life, the gut enhances its "ability to grasp water," and as a result, hydration throughout the body is sustained.
Preventing dehydration is
not a competition of chugging water.
It is
