The Rebellion of the "XX Brain"! How to Face the Flood of "Brains"
When I peeked into a bookstore, the recommended books section had turned into a "brain museum."
"Hyperactive Brain," "Smartphone Brain," "Ultimate Brain," "Stress Brain," "Mental Brain," and even "Post-Smartphone Brain."
Every book seems to be speaking directly to your brain, as if saying, "Your brain is XX! Now, let's do something about it!"
Yes, we are living in an era where we are categorized, diagnosed, and corrected by the label of "brain."
It is as if the brain has become the latest fashion trend.
It wouldn't be surprising to see a book jacket that says, "The Post-Smartphone Brain is the current trend!"
This "XX Brain" boom might be a reflection of the serious problems facing modern society.
We are exposed to too much information, forced to make too many choices, and often lose sight of what our own hearts are feeling.
And that is where the savior named "XX Brain" has appeared with such flair.
"The reason you are always restless is because you have a Hyperactive Brain."
"The reason you can't sleep at night is because your Stress Brain is running wild."
"It's okay, if you fix that Smartphone Brain, you can be happier."
When told that, I feel a sense of relief.
Just by having a single-character label of "brain" attached to the vague emotions and unexplained ailments we carry, it feels as if we have finally identified the disease, and it makes sense.
However, wait a minute.
Does this term "XX Brain" really save us?
This "XX Brain" boom is spreading like a pandemic.
Once diagnosed with a "Smartphone Brain," one starts training to become an "Ultimate Brain." However, while aiming for an Ultimate Brain, many people seem to fall into a negative loop where they are attacked by new stresses and become a "Mental Brain"...
Someone might install a meditation app to overcome their "Smartphone Brain" and practice it every morning and night without fail. But while continuing to meditate every day,
"Is this app really effective?"
"Would another meditation app be better?"
They might end up with an "App Brain" instead.
This is exactly what putting the cart before the horse means.
Perhaps we have been pushed around by our "brains" all along.
A "Logical Brain" that only makes excuses, an "Emotional Brain" that suppresses feelings.
Or perhaps an "Apathetic Brain" that chooses to do nothing, and a "Perfectionist Brain" that always demands perfection.
These are all, so to speak, habits of the brain that we have cultivated throughout our lives.
We must not treat those habits as if they were defects.
It seems we need to face and engage in a dialogue with each of our "XX Brains."
If your smartphone brain is running wild, why not seal away your smartphone for a day and immerse yourself in an analog world?
If your stress brain is screaming, try listening to that scream and intentionally creating time to do nothing.
Humans are not merely a collection of "XX brains."
Emotions, thoughts, memories, and worries are all intricately intertwined to form the one and only "me."
The brain is not like a computer, either.
To use a metaphor, it is a vast jungle.
There are unexplored lands and unpredictable events. That is the fascination and depth of the brain.
The brain is by no means an object to be "corrected."
Rather, it is an irreplaceable "partner" that is working hard to adapt to various environments.
This "XX brain" boom might eventually trigger a "rebellion" of our own.
"I am not a smartphone brain. I am me!"
The day will come when we raise a flag of rebellion against the categorization of our brains.
Perhaps that is when we will finally be able to face ourselves as we truly are.
Today and tomorrow, your "brain" is working hard for your sake.
Come on, why not gently stroke this lovable "XX brain" once in a while?
