🌿Vol.168 High LDL Cholesterol Was a Sign of Kapha—A Discussion on Ayurveda and Lipid Metabolism
Have you ever looked at your health check results and been told that your LDL is high?
Even though you are careful about your diet. Even though you are exercising. Why?
Ayurveda answers that question from a slightly different angle than Western medicine.
1.🩺Reading LDL Cholesterol Through Ayurveda
Ayurveda views an increase in LDL (low-density lipoprotein) as an excess of Kapha and an accumulation of Ama.
The qualities of Kapha are 'heavy, oily, sticky, slow, and cold.' When these qualities become excessive in the body, lipids accumulate in the blood vessels as if they are sticking to them. The idea is that this manifests as an increase in LDL cholesterol.
What Western medicine describes as 'abnormal lipid metabolism,' Ayurveda describes as 'accumulation of Kapha and Ama.' They are looking at the same thing.
2.🍔If Agni is weak, lipids are not metabolized
This is the core of the matter.
No matter how good your diet is, if your Agni (digestive fire) is weak, you cannot completely metabolize what you eat. What is not fully digested becomes 'Ama' (undigested waste) and accumulates throughout the body, including the blood vessels.
Ayurveda considers that many people with high LDL have a weakened Agni.
It is not a problem of the quantity or quality of what you eat, but a problem of your digestive power.
3.🏃♀️Why, even though I am exercising?
The answer to the question of 'I am moving this much, so why?' is also here.
Moving the body consumes Kapha. However, if you continue to eat while your Agni remains weak, accumulation can exceed consumption.
Furthermore, Kapha also accumulates as stagnation of emotions and thoughts. Emotions you haven't let go of, experiences you haven't fully digested—these also become internal Ama and make Kapha heavy.
Exercise is a necessary condition, but not a sufficient one. Balancing Agni is the fundamental solution.
4.🪷Ayurvedic Measures for LDL
**① Use spices that increase Agni**
Turmeric, black pepper, dry ginger, cinnamon, and cumin. These have the effect of promoting blood purification and lipid metabolism while increasing digestive power. You only need to incorporate a small amount into your daily meals.
**② Refrain from foods that increase Kapha**
Sweets, cold foods, greasy foods, dairy products, and wheat. These directly increase the "heavy, oily, and sticky" qualities of Kapha. Late-night meals and overeating, in particular, deplete Agni the most.
**③ Make lunch your largest meal**
Eat your heaviest meal at noon when Agni is at its strongest. Keep dinner light and eat it early. This habit alone can significantly change your lipid metabolism.
**④ Move Kapha with morning exercise**
By moving your body during the Kapha time of day (6:00 AM to 10:00 AM), you can reset the accumulation of Kapha for the day. Running and strength training are more effective when done in the morning.
**⑤ Flush out internal Ama**
Consciously flush out undigested emotions and experiences as well. Writing in a journal, talking, and letting go—these are also excellent measures against LDL.
5.🌿Numbers are the body's voice
Health checkup numbers are nothing to be afraid of.
They are signs that your body is telling you, "Pay attention here."
If your LDL is high, it means it is time to review your Kapha and Agni. Before suppressing the numbers with medication, there is the option of changing the "sowing of seeds" that is your lifestyle.
What Ayurveda has been teaching for 5,000 years is to know and balance your own body before relying on medicine.
Rather than being swayed by numbers, nurture your Agni
