Just 'Noticing' Clears the Mind—My Commute with the Buddha
— What I Realized by Observing Things as They Are —
It has been raining for the past few days.
The sky has been gloomy, and I feel like my heart has been a bit clouded too.
My steps to work felt heavy, and I kept thinking, 'I just don't feel bright.'
But this morning, while walking, I suddenly realized something.
'Haven't I been walking under the sun lately?'
In that moment, my heart felt a little lighter.
I was able to think, 'Let me just observe things as they are.'
It's okay to blame the weather.
Just by noticing, 'Oh, this is how I feel right now,' I felt my mind settle a little bit.
In Light of the Buddha's Teachings
The Buddha taught that 'everything arises from causes and conditions.'
There is a reason it rains, and there is a reason the heart feels heavy.
It is not because you are weak,
but simply because those 'conditions' have come together.
Observe it by saying, 'This is the weather of my heart right now.'
From there, the suffering begins to subside.
And in that moment of awareness, the sun of the heart begins to peek out.
From a Scientific Perspective
It is said that when you bathe in sunlight, a substance called 'serotonin' is secreted in the brain,
which helps stabilize your mood.
In other words, the brightness of the heart is deeply related to the body's rhythm.
In the Buddha's words, that too is a 'condition.'
As physical conditions like sunlight, diet, sleep, and exercise are met,
the state of the mind also changes.
The Light Outside and the Light Within
The 'physical conditions' that science teaches us.
And the 'mental conditions' brought about by awareness.
Sunlight regulates the body,
and the light of awareness regulates the mind.
When these two come together,
you realize that even rainy days contain a quiet light.
In Conclusion
A rainy day might be a mirror reflecting the clouds in your heart.
Weather and moods are just things that pass.
That is why I want to remember the small light of 'noticing.'
To borrow the Buddha's words,
'Rain, too, is a condition for enlightenment.'
