AI changed my music video without my permission

When you create videos with AI, things don't go as planned. The music video I produced this time, "HABU," was originally supposed to be a completely different work.

The theme I wanted to express was simple. It was the theme of "daily accumulation."

Learning a little every day, taking on challenges, and moving forward while making mistakes. I was thinking of expressing that figure through a more straightforward video.

However, the resulting video turned out to be something entirely different. A single drop of black ink falls onto a white sheet of paper.

From there, a black habu snake appears. The snake crawls around the ground, and tree roots are born from its trail.

And in the end, it grows into a huge, massive tree. It became a mysterious video that I hadn't even anticipated myself.

Why did it turn into this kind of work? Today, I'm going to write about that story.

AI broke my plans over and over again

I used Google Veo for this music video production. Google Veo generates video in 8-second increments.

In other words, it's closer to the feeling of having a conversation with AI every 8 seconds rather than video production. First, I decide on the initial frame.

I imagine the state after 8 seconds and generate it. Then, something unexpected comes out.

From there, I think about the next step. It was a repetition of that.

At first, I was also trying to control the AI. I wished for it to move like this, change like this, and end like this.

But it didn't go well. In fact, the more detailed my instructions were, the more unnatural the video became.

After repeating the generation dozens of times, I realized something.

Perhaps AI works are not meant to be created exactly as intended. Maybe they are things to be nurtured through dialogue.

That is how I came to think about it.

Picking up coincidences and nurturing them

The turning point was a realization I had while playing catch with the AI.

When I let go of my initial fixations and accepted the unexpected movements the AI returned, it evolved into a development where a hub was born from an ink stain and grew into a large tree.

It was a bizarre visual I hadn't planned on using at first, but that footage had a strange vitality to it.

It was by no means beautiful, nor was it polished, but for some reason, I couldn't take my eyes off it. That was how the direction of the entire work was decided.

Looking back at the finished video, I feel a bit strange. It feels more like me than the video I had originally intended to make.

Our journey, starting from a black stain

The black ink falling onto white paper represents the anxiety and suffering that suddenly arrive in life.

It might be a health issue, or perhaps a relationship problem. Or maybe it's a fear of the future.

It is an event like a black stain that has fallen upon the heart. The hub that emerges from that darkness is the power of life itself.

It is the vitality that tries to move forward even if it's messy. The roots that are born from the trail the hub crawled are the accumulation of learning.

Reading books, failing, taking on challenges—all of that becomes the roots.

And the hub climbs around those roots, drawing a spiral.

That figure, rising step by step to greater heights, feels like it represents an endless cycle of growth.

I feel like life is similar.

There are times when you feel like you aren't growing. There are times when you feel like you are repeating the same mistakes.

But when you look back, you have properly moved forward. Perhaps I wanted to express that figure in the form of a spiral.

Not erasing the stain, but growing it

The large tree that is completed at the end is a point of arrival. What was initially an eerie black stain becomes a large tree over time.

And I wanted to express a future that becomes a place to protect someone, heal them, and provide shelter from the rain and wind.

I myself thought while making this video: creation and life don't start in a beautiful form from the beginning, do they?

Actually, it often starts with a black stain. From an unfathomable darkness, I grow a large tree where there was nothing before.

When I do that, I sometimes arrive at scenery I never imagined. This MV might just be a record of that.

Leading up to the full release on June 13th

On June 13th, I will release the full MV along with the EP "ZASHIKI." I would be happy if you could see the rest of this work.

And if you are interested in the production process with AI, stories of failure, and records of trial and error, please take a look at my newsletter (Substack).

I have a feeling that the process along the way is more interesting than the finished work itself.

I deliver it directly to your mailbox as a more closed letter.

▼ (1) For those who want to read more deeply about the "unfinished thought process" of AI and creation

Instead of clean, correct answers, I share daily production scenes, stories of my struggles with AI, the history of hip-hop, and more.

Also, even if you have zero musical experience or knowledge, I am giving away a free Suno beginner's guide exclusively to LINE subscribers so you can start today without getting lost.

So, please look forward to the release of the EP "ZASHIKI" on June 13th.
