Why I Study for Certifications Without Taking the Exams

I have been studying for certifications for about 30 years.

When I tell people I'm studying for a certification, they often ask, "Oh, are you going to get certified?"
But, in reality, I have no plans to take the exams.
I just love studying, and I don't think about the exams at all.

Certification textbooks are easy to study from because they organize knowledge in a field from the ground up.
Plus, since they make it easy to step up—like "this part is the basics, and this part is the application"—it feels great when things I didn't know before just click into place.
When I start exploring a new field, certification textbooks are my go-to.

Since I don't take the exams, I enjoy studying in a relaxed way.
I enjoy the time spent collecting various reference books and making notes, and I get excited whenever I make a new discovery like, "Oh, so that's how it is!"
Those moments are the greatest reward for me.

That is why my certification study is a "hobby" completely unrelated to passing or failing an exam.
I am just purely enjoying the process of increasing my knowledge.
It feels more like I am fully enjoying the process of gaining knowledge and broadening my horizons rather than whether or not I can actually get the certification.
It might be a bit unusual, but for me, this is the most enjoyable time!
