How BTS Songs Are Made According to Copyrights [BTS x Music Producers]

The age where I'm curious about BTS's music producers

I track the copyright information of BTS members.

I mainly refer to the KOMCA (Korea Music Copyright Association) database, but it also contains information on everyone other than BTS (music producers).

I previously used this to look into the music producers who created songs with BTS, and although I vowed to do it again because it was interesting, I completely forgot. Sorry lol

I found various things while organizing my materials, so I'd like to introduce them this time as well!

Songs for which BTS holds copyrights

The data this time is basically for songs where BTS members hold copyrights.

The reason is that for songs provided entirely by others without copyright, and which are works by overseas producers, the copyright data is not in KOMCA, so I am still searching for it.
I can generally figure it out by using overseas copyright databases like JASRAC, but the data formats are different, so I have to align them...

As of May 21, 2025, there are 354 songs where any of the BTS members are registered as copyright holders with KOMCA (Korea Music Copyright Association). Not all songs from Jin's 2nd mini-album "ECHO" have been registered yet💦
There are over 400 copyright holders who have written lyrics and composed music with them alone.

Number of copyrights held as of May 21, 2025

By the way, there are the following 3 types of KOMCA membership IDs. I haven't found information to verify this, but looking at everyone, I speculate that this is the classification.

Rules for membership IDs
Starts with "1": Basic form for domestic Korean members
Starts with "W": Official registration related to overseas expansion?
Starts with "Z": For overseas musician registration (whether they are full members is unknown)
Note: "Z9999900" seems to be for Koreans who have not signed a trust agreement or are under a provisional contract, and multiple people are included in the same ID.

Roughly speaking, those starting with Z are provisional registrations (overseas producers), and the others are full registrations (Korean producers).

Which songs have the most copyright holders involved?

So first, let's look at the songs with the most copyright holders!

In short, these are songs that everyone worked on together.
I thought that was likely to happen if they were born from song camps, but looking at the names, there is a tendency for "songs developed based on provided tracks sent from overseas" to be the most numerous.

Song Camp:
A workshop-style camp where composers, lyricists, producers, artists, etc., gather to intensively produce music in a short period of time.
It is easy to mass-produce diverse songs, and it is used as a place for networking and collaboration, as well as for discovering and nurturing new talent.

Combined answers from conversational AI ChatGPT and conversational AI Perplexity

When reading interviews with various music producers, the way provided songs are used varies; it seems that not only do BTS add lyrics to the songs, but they also sometimes mix the best parts of multiple songs to create new music.

For example, in the case of Hobi's CNS, the names I see often and the names I'm not used to are half and half. I imagine that the BIGHIT music producers might have added their touch to the provided track.

List of copyright holders for "CHICKEN NOODLE SOUP (FEAT. BECKY G)"

The song with the most copyright holders

19 copyright holders: "WE ARE BULLETPROOF THE ETERNAL"

There are 19 copyright holders. In addition to the three members of the rap line, 16 other people were involved in the songwriting and composition, making the credit information extremely long.

RM, J-HOPE, SUGA
KARLSSON ALEXANDER MAGNUS, ARMATO ANTONINA, BERG TOLLBOM ELLEN ANNIE BEATA, CAZZIOPEIA, VIKTOROVITCH ALEXEJ, YOUNG JORDAN,
SOSA CANDACE NICOLE, AUDIEN, TOOMEY AMELIA KATE WOODWARD, ELOHIM, ZELMANI ETTA, DAHLQVIST GUSTEN ROBERT, COOKE SOPHIE FRANCES, MICHELSEN HENRIK BARMAN, TANNERGARD WILLE ERIK HUGO, JONES JULY

The copyright holders are the 19 people listed above. It's impressive. Everyone other than the rap line has an ID starting with Z, which seems to indicate overseas producers.

By the way, the runners-up are as follows.

  • 14 copyright holders: "INTRODUCTION YOUTH"

  • 13 copyright holders: "Run BTS""THE PLANET"

The solo song with the most copyright holders

Next, let's look at the members' solo songs.

The trend seems to be that recent songs tend to have a larger number of people involved. This is particularly noticeable in the vocal line's songs.
It appears that music creation has shifted from an individual task to a team project. Conversely, it might mean that they are no longer in a situation where they can take their time creating music alone.

Judging solely from the copyright information, past solo songs have a strong sense of being handmade, likely created in hotels while on tour, but since the start of their solo activity period, group creation seems to have become the norm. BTS songs have shown this trend for a long time, but it feels like a wave of change has finally arrived for their solo songs as well.

I perceive that online collaboration accelerated during the COVID-19 pandemic, and the adoption frequency of provided songs has increased due to the success of the three major English songs, the rise in demand for music due to solo activities, and the need to pack in work before military service.

Copyright IDs for solo songs. Z (dark blue) represents overseas producers, and the proportion has increased sharply since songs released in 2022.

JIN

18 copyright holders: "LOSER (FEAT. YENA)"

Pdogg is involved in the majority of Jin's solo songs.
Up until "SUPER TUNA," he created music domestically, but since "The Astronaut," the number of songs provided from overseas has increased significantly, and the number of associated music producers has grown.
I feel like I can see him transforming into a global artist not just as a group member, but also as a solo artist!

SUGA

8 Copyright Holders: "LIFE GOES ON" *D-DAY Version

SUGA's solo songs have relatively few associated copyright holders for the number of tracks, with about 20 people across 3 albums. In terms of involvement, EL CAPITXN and PDOGG stand out, giving the impression that he prefers working with a small, trusted group. He did hold a songwriting camp for "Road To D-DAY," but looking at these numbers, it seems like a very exclusive club.

Since there are many songs with 4 or fewer copyright holders, "LIFE GOES ON" is seen as an exception because it is based on the BTS version.

J-HOPE

11 Copyright Holders: "CHICKEN NOODLE SOUP (FEAT. BECKY G)"

After Hobi finished his first album "HOPE WORLD" by hand (only songs with 3 or fewer involved copyright holders), his collaboration with Becky G on CNS seems to have been a turning point, and he has been working with a wide range of music producers ever since.

In a sense, his creation style is the opposite of SUGA's; there are over 40 music producers involved across 3 albums and a single, but the ones he works with repeatedly are mostly PDOGG and other BIGHIT music producers.
This might sound misleading, but I get the impression that he is expanding his network and musical breadth while hedging his bets with trusted, familiar music producers, which feels like a very solid career-building strategy.

RM

10 Copyright Holders: "DOMODACHI (FEAT. LITTLE SIMZ)"

Namjoon... since he has over 230 songs under his copyright, the number of associated music producers is abnormally high lol

He seems to be the type who likes to repeat collaborations with people he likes or wants to create something with, and a characteristic of his work is that he works with the same people multiple times.
For example, recently, the "Balming Tiger" team, JNKYRD and San Yawn, whom he met through "Sexy Nukim," participated in almost all the songs on "RPWP," and he has also collaborated with John Eun, whom he met through "BICYCLE," on his subsequent albums "Indigo" and "RPWP."

John Eun
A South Korean singer-songwriter and music producer.
Debuted in 2019 with "Groove Merchant." The person playing guitar in "RM of BTS: Tiny Desk (Home) Concert."
BTS songs with his copyright: "BICYCLE," "No.2," "Amnesia," "AROUND THE WORLD IN A DAY," "RIGHT PEOPLE WRONG PLACE"

Summary of search results

By the way, outside of his solo work, Namjoon is also involved in TOMORROW X TOGETHER's "0X1=LOVESONG (I KNOW I LOVE YOU)," and this song also has a high number of associated copyright holders, between 13 and 15, which shows how much effort was put into it.

JIMIN

11 Copyright Holders: "SLOW DANCE (FEAT. SOFIA CARSON)"

If I had to name a characteristic of Jimin's solo songs, it would be that he is firmly protected by his three musketeers, right? lol

He made his brother albums "FACE" and "MUSE" together with Team Jimin—GHSTLOOP, PDOGG, and EVAN—so these three stand out significantly.
For other songs, Slow Rabbit hyung provides full support, and it feels like he is a child being carefully nurtured among the BIGHIT music producers.

The level of involvement from overseas producers increased from "FACE" to "MUSE."
If things go as expected, the next album might be a global-oriented one with fully provided tracks like "GOLDEN," but judging by "Are You Sure?!," it seems he is still in a phase of enjoying his own songwriting, so I'm curious about future developments!

V

6 Copyright Holders: 'WHEREVER U R (FT. V OF BTS)'

A characteristic of V and Jungkook's solo songs is the very high percentage of songs provided by others. 'Layover' is an album consisting entirely of provided songs.

This direction does not seem to have been inherited by V and Jungkook so far. Even in their solo albums, they focused on using provided songs rather than self-composed ones to showcase diverse worldviews and new sides of themselves.

From 'The Roots of BTS Songs and the Individuality Seen in Solo Songs'

The tendency of the music producers involved is similar to Hobi's; they work widely with many different people, and there is no one they repeat with intensively.
The average number of people involved per song is 4 to 5, so it's not that small, but I get the impression that they are the type who have broad interests and want to try working with anyone who catches their eye.

Even with the same direction, why is it that I feel a desire for planned career development in Hobi's case, but curiosity in V's case? lol
Is it because, among the members, the degree of involvement of overseas producers is low and the increasing trend is not that significant, so I feel a desire to make what they like without worrying about global strategies?

JUNG KOOK

8 Copyright Holders: 'NEVER LET GO'

Jungkook's solo songs are clearly divided into songs made compactly with about 2 copyright holders, or larger songs with 5-6 or more people (songs for the world involving overseas producers).
In the case of Jin and Jimin, the degree of involvement of overseas producers gradually increased over multiple albums, but in Jungkook's case, it feels like a skip-evolution from handmade songs to 'GOLDEN'.

The percentage of completely provided songs is even higher than V's, and 'GOLDEN' is an album of completely provided songs. Like V and J-Hope, he works widely with various people, and regardless of whether they are BIGHIT or overseas, there is no producer he repeats with intensively.

Looking at it, I get the impression that Jungkook's solo work is the most like a 'global project'.
Watching things like 'I AM STILL', Bang PD and Pdogg PD are by his side, but at this point, it feels less like they are creating music together and more like they are taking a step back and raising the artist JUNG KOOK.

Solo songs with the fewest copyright holders

JIN

2 Copyright Holders: 'Super Tuna'

This is a song made by BUMZU and JIN. Jin mentioned that he made it because he wanted to go fishing together.

BUMZU seems to often work on songs for other artists like SEVENTEEN, and this and Jin's solo song 'Abyss' are the only ones he has participated in for BTS songs.
So the music producer Bang PD brought in saying, 'I'll find someone suitable for you,' was him!

While spending my days receiving counseling for this matter, I talked to Bang PD, and he suggested that I try singing about these feelings now.
When I replied, 'I don't have the confidence to make it well, and what if it doesn't turn out well? I've reached a position where such things are no longer allowed...', Bang PD said, 'That's not important. But if you do end up doing it, you will surely do well. I will find someone who suits you.'
That is how I met the composer Kye Bum-ju (BUMZU) hyung, and we talked about my current feelings and many other things.

SUGA

1 Copyright Holder: '724148', 'Haegeum', 'SKIT', 'SEESAW (DEMO VER.)', 'GIVE IT TO ME'

A characteristic of SUGA's solo songs is that quite a few were made entirely by him alone. It's unique to Yoongi, who has high comprehensive skills in songwriting, composing, arranging, and producing!
"SKIT" is a title shared by other songs, but this one is the track included on "AGUST D".

J-HOPE

2 Copyright Holders: A total of 13 songs, from each track on "HOPE WORLD" to "ON THE STREET (SOLO VERSION)" and "DNA (J-HOPE DEMO VER.)"

Hobi's solo songs have a very strong sense of commitment to creating them himself. However, it's not that he rejects others; he realistically borrows the hands of professionals as well.

RM

2 Copyright Holders: 23 songs, from "SKIT: ON THE START LINE" on the debut album to "LONELY" and "No.2" on "Indigo"

An unexpected inclusion is V's solo song "Singularity" (PERRY CHARLES JAMES, RM). Mr. PERRY is registered as a provisional ID in KOMCA, and since no other songs were listed, I looked him up.

Regarding Charlie J Perry and V's solo song "Singularity":
They gave me a wonderful brief. It was like poetry. They expressed the vibe they wanted through poetry. It was truly incredible. The brief was so emotionally evocative that the song just came to me naturally.
They said they liked music like Daniel Caesar's and wanted a neo-soul kind of song. I'm a huge fan of D'Angelo, and that kind of ballad-like atmosphere is very popular right now, and it's something everyone is drawn to.
(Omitted)

I always think it's important to keep the song simple to let the vocals shine. After all, what everyone is listening to is the vocals, and the way that person personally connects the singing to the song.
I kept the chords simple, made sure the vocals were clearly audible, and created plenty of space for the harmonies to highlight each part.
When I heard the finished song, I was genuinely overwhelmed. I felt that V had truly, truly connected his heart with this song. Even though we hadn't actually met yet, a very beautiful experience was born there. The music I sent to the other side of the world was received by someone with such passion and emotion. That in itself was an incredibly wonderful experience. I think he definitely had the character that perfectly fit this song.

This interview article also features the following music producers, which is very interesting. Highly recommended!

"Euphoria" Melanie Fontana, DJ Swivel
"Serendipity" Ray Michael Djan Jr., Ashton Foster
"Dimple" Matthew Tishler
"The Truth Untold" Jake Torrey
"I’m Fine" Ray Michael Djan Jr.
"IDOL" Ali Tamposi & Roman Campolo
"Answer: Love Myself" Conor Maynard

Each music producer comments on the songs from "Love Yourself: Answer"

JIMIN

3 Copyright Holders: "Promise" and "Christmas Love" (SLOW RABBIT, RM, JIMIN)

Jimin's solo songs currently have a minimum of 3 people involved. Perhaps he prefers creating while interacting with various people.
There are two songs, and it's emotional that the same members worked on the songs in 2018 and 2020 (*´艸`)

V

2 Copyright Holders: "SNOW FLOWER (FEAT. PEAKBOY)" (PEAK BOY, V), "SCENERY" (DOC SKIM, V)

Peakboy is famous for being in the Wooga Squad, but I didn't know Dogskim, so I looked him up. So he was the person who was going to quit being a producer after Namjoon's "Wild Flower" but found music fun again! (Commentary mob)

Dogskim
A keyboardist who has performed with Seo Taiji, EPIK HIGH, BTS, and others. He is also a member of BTS's live band 'Ghost' and a music producer. He played keyboards for 'RM of BTS: Tiny Desk (Home) Concert'.

JUNG KOOK

1 copyright holder: 'STILL WITH YOU (ACAPELLA)'

The a cappella version of Jungkook's solo song. It's a track where you can fully enjoy his beautiful voice!

By the way, the runners-up (with 2 copyright holders) were the following two songs.
Both are FESTA songs. Truly handmade gifts. Thank you...!

  • 'STILL WITH YOU' (PDOGG, JUNG KOOK)

  • 'MY YOU' (HISS NOISE, JUNG KOOK)

What we can learn from how the songs are made

This time, I looked at the copyright holders involved with BTS for each song, and I found it very interesting as it gave a glimpse into their creative styles and differences in release strategies.

The rap line has a large number of copyrighted songs, so their tendencies are easy to see, but their preferences are quite distinct. It was interesting to see how each of the three had their own way!
Watching this, I got the impression that for Namjoon, making music feels close to 'socializing.' While his creative speed is certainly a factor in his repeat collaboration rate, it's cute to imagine him going to someone he likes and begging, 'Hyung, let's do it again!' ( *´艸`)

Also, this is just my own speculation, but looking at the songs, it feels like there's a hint that the agency isn't necessarily pushing the eldest member to 'make a hit!', so I'm curious to see what happens in the future.
Jin, who reportedly shot down the agency's suggestion to 'go for a luxurious look for the MV' by saying 'it's better if it's interesting.' He told Wendy-sunbaenim and ARMY that he mixed his own voice into the horse neighing in 'ROPE IT,' which shocked everyone. I'm very curious if he will honestly follow the path of targeting the world. He seems like a tough one to handle lol

BTS's copyrighted songs will likely continue to increase. I intend to keep diligently tracking them. It's something to look forward to!!
