[BTS] A Deep Dive into the Secrets of "Teasers" [MV]

What surprised me when I got into K-POP was the comeback system.
Since exposure is concentrated during the promotional period after an album release, there is a huge variety of videos that come out alongside the release of a single song.

Also, if it's a performance track, they release a "Performance Video" or a fixed-camera "Choreography Video," right? So many!?

So, this time, I'd like to focus on the Teasers that usually come out before an album release and learn from past examples.

Let's dive deep into Teasers

What is a Teaser?

It's a short video, ranging from a few seconds to a minute, released just before the official launch. Most of them show fragmented, impressive scenes, such as highlights from the MV.

There's something similar called a Trailer, but those are a bit longer. In BTS's case, songs that "aren't quite MV material but are definitely worth watching" are sometimes included in their entirety as a "Comeback Trailer," like the WINGS solo tracks.

Albums have a main promotional track (title track), but from what I've seen this time, there are also pre-release tracks, and rumor has it that some of those get MVs made for them too.

Example: In the case of Jin's "HAPPY"

Where can I find Teasers?

Basically, they are on the HYBE channel.
There are multiple official BTS channels, and they seem to be divided as follows:

  • Visualizers and other videos

• JP Official and Universal Music Japan Channel

  • Japanese songs

What kind of Teasers are there?

Since they are basically considered a pair with the MV, I checked the title tracks and singles for each album, and they were almost all there. For the ones that had two, I labeled them "①②".
By the way, the ① for "No More Dream" and "N.O" is more of a member introduction than a song. So fresh-faced...!

By the way, the average length per video is 38 seconds.
The longest one is this, at 1:55.

I haven't included pre-release tracks in this research, but the longest time from the first teaser to the album release was 9 days for 'DARK & WILD', and the shortest was the day before for 'MAP OF THE SOUL : 7'.
On average, it's 4 days, and recent trends show they are released 3 days before.

Following this pattern, for 'ARIRANG', it might look something like this.

Teaser Patterns

I think the basic one uses parts of the MV or song and reveals the album title and release date.
I thought they were all like that, but looking into it, there are surprisingly many variations. There are even cuts not found in the MV.

For example, Jungkook's whistling that I want to loop infinitely...

Wait, so that's what MAGIC SHOP was like!? There are various patterns.

An unusual teaser (1): 'ON'

Among the ones I've seen, only 'ON' doesn't have a standard teaser.
It seems a 30-second audio clip was released exclusively on TikTok, but it is no longer available.

'ON' is a rare case where the 'Kinetic Manifesto Film' was released at the same time as the album. An MV was released later, but perhaps because the ARMY's initial momentum was too strong or the Kinetic version was just that good, the view counts are about double.

An unusual teaser (2): 'Yet To Come'

The day after the regular teaser, individual teasers for the seven members were released. Please check them out from the playlist mentioned earlier!
Honestly, if something like this is released during this period, I might realize that a farewell is near and accidentally start crying...

Songs that aren't title tracks but have teasers

Among those I've found so far, the four songs that aren't title tracks but have teasers are 'Just one day', 'Not Today', 'MIC Drop (Steve Aoki Remix)', and 'Film out'.
I still don't know the background behind this. Maybe they were pre-release tracks, or perhaps they were aimed specifically at the Japanese market.

I've been watching MV rankings for about a year and a half, and there's a 'mystery of popular songs that aren't title tracks but are regulars on the charts,' and these—especially 'Not Today' and 'MIC Drop (Steve Aoki Remix)'—fit that description.

I don't know if songs with teasers are being pushed, or if they have teasers before the MV comes out because they are already popular, but I feel like there is some kind of causal relationship.

Teasers for solo songs

In the case of MVs released by HYBE / BIGHIT, I think teasers are a standard set, so there are also teasers for solo songs.
The kind that makes you want to partner with JR...

The kind where you don't know the song or the face, but you just say 'Okay, I'll buy it!'...

It's a thrilling selection. This is wonderful!!

Tour teasers

What I found interesting were the ones for tours and concerts.
It seems there is a distinction where the advance notice is a 'Teaser (Trailer)' and the post-event 'Please buy the disc!' is a 'SPOT'.

Grasp the history of Bangtan by binge-watching the teasers

Since the teasers are short, around one minute long, it's easy to watch them all at once ( *´艸｀)
Looking back like this is very convenient because you can see the history of BTS's activities in fast-forward.

My thoughts after binge-watching

In the early MVs, Jin stands out among the rowdy young Bangtan members with his uniquely mature and perfected beauty!
Seeing him in close-ups on the thumbnails for "Boy In Luv" and "FIRE," I can't help but imagine the staff's determination to "go with this face!"

By the way, I get the same feeling from the thumbnail for "Black Swan." Sorry for having a constitution that just receives these things on its own (*ﾉωﾉ)

However, by the time we reach The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, the rough-around-the-edges rap line suddenly starts to mature, and the maknae line, who were like little monkeys, transform into beautiful young men. If we're talking about the evolution of the Earth, this is where the Cambrian explosion occurred. Don't compare Bangtan to trilobites.
Every time I watch this part, I worry that ARMYs who fell in love with the early Bangtan might have been bedridden from the shock of the difference. No, I love both versions, though.

Since then, Bangtan has continued to evolve in an increasingly glamorous way. As you'd expect from trailers, there are so many great shots that make you want to scream, "Show me the full version already!!" and I can't suppress my thirst.
While I'm constantly distracted by their looks, the strength of their musical individuality, which allows us to still enjoy songs from over 10 years ago, is also amazing.

ARMYs (like me) who thought, "Teasers are just trailers, right?" should definitely take this opportunity to re-watch them. It's fun!
And let's fantasize together about what the "ARIRANG" teaser will be like. We're getting two, right!?

Bonus: ALBUM Preview

This is a pattern I saw for the first time this time. They introduce a little bit of every song on the album, and it feels like such a great deal because there are so many nice cuts from the sketches and clips. I want them to do this every time!!
