BTS Introduction: Encountering a New Culture Part 5 - Accessories and Flower Crowns
[2025/3/26] I never expected Jin to be the first one to wear a face chain!!
Encountering Korean Culture returns
Korean male idols and accessories
I was a complete K-pop novice before getting into BTS, but looking back now, I feel like I had heard rumors about it indirectly. That's because I also like Takarazuka, and there were quite a few K-pop fans among the Takarazienne. I used to see it mentioned in talk shows and magazine columns.
[Takarazienne]
A coined term combining 'Takarazuka + Parisienne' to refer to members of the troupe. While the troupe pushes the term 'Takarazienne', the 'Zuka' faction is the majority, so 'Zukazienne' has taken root. Since they are usually called 'Jienne-san' for short, peace is maintained without the issue coming to light.
Because of those snippets I'd heard, I did have the awareness that 'Korean idols often wear accessories even if they are men', but I had mostly forgotten about it.
I did think, 'They have a lot of accessories,' in a vague way. Layering is also common. However, I was too distracted by
feeding each other and physical closeness, so I left all the trivial matters alone. I'm embarrassed by my limited capacity.
Agust D's pearl necklace
The other day, while watching 'Suchwita', this was what caught my attention.

—Huh? 'The necklace is cute'?
It really is a necklace! And with small pearls, too?
Wait, Agust D-sensei, who is a hardcore, hardcore rapper? (Confused)
Even for me, who had been ignoring the accessory issue until now, 'rapper + pearl necklace' was just too intriguing. When I think of rappers, I imagine thick gold chains, but... ah, right, Bangtan was an
idol group before that. That's right.
Verification, and then to the search
Here, I finally dug up the memory that 'Korean idols often wear accessories even if they are men' seems to be true. First, I started verifying whether my knowledge was correct.
Korean male idols are particular about their fashion and styling, using earrings, necklaces, and rings to create more unique and cool styles. It also has the effect of enhancing the appeal of their performance as part of their stage costumes. In this way, for Korean male idols, accessories play an important role in fashion and performance.
Ah, it seems I wasn't wrong. Now that the pre-learning is over, I've searched for what kind of accessories they actually wore, so I'd like to share the souvenirs! I'm sorry, but there will be no mention of brands or prices. Thank you for your understanding.
Bangtan and necklaces
JIN

Jin's accessories, in terms of quantity, frequency, and design, seem relatively understated. Because his own beauty is so strong, the accessories are just like parsley as a garnish. He doesn't wear them much in his daily life, but he wears them properly on stage, which gives me the feeling of a parent at a school observation day who draws a line by saying, 'I'll wear them when I need to look proper.' They say if you see his private accessories, you'll have a good day. That's a lie.
Postscript: Since then, thanks to his appointment as an ambassador for the luxury jewelry brand FRED, the range of when he 'looks proper' has had its upper limit removed. The seriousness of the eldest brother is scary!!
SUGA

SUGA is relatively free-spirited. It's wonderful how he has such a wide range, looking good in everything from cute to rugged pieces. When I think that we wouldn't have seen this much if he were just a rapper, gratitude wells up in me for him becoming an idol! I love the photo of him in the leather choker on the bottom left. The texture of the leather pressed against his white throat is irresistible... (I'm a pervert).
J-HOPE

Hobi is really good at matching colors and textures in his overall fashion. It's wonderful how he can pull off colorful accessories that feel like a toy box. He feels like an advanced user! In the photo above, the fact that he can pull off a junk plastic choker with a heart on it shows the true strength of a fashion leader!
RM

Like Jin, Namjoon follows the understated route. The feeling of 'wearing accessories when I need to look proper' is similar, and I feel a positive attitude toward his profession. Fighting!
Because he has a good physique, he could probably pull off rugged pieces, but I feel like he wears a lot of small beadwork. Namjoon often brings his hands to his face during photo shoots, so I get nervous that he might accidentally break them ( *´艸`)
JIMIN

Compared to the hyung line, Jimin-chan seems to boldly choose everything from high-brand items to accessories with clear self-assertion. It's fun to watch!
The fact that there are many photos of him with rugged accessories is my personal taste. I have a soft spot for Jimin-chan when he throws away elegance and delicacy and lets his Busan blood boil, so I can't help it ( *´艸`)
Because his neck is long, chokers suit him very well. Wonderful...!
V

Among the ones I've seen this time, the one with the widest range of accessory genres was, as expected, Tae-tae.
When Tae-tae wears them, the accessories become part of 'V' and melt into his world before they can assert themselves, so even with photos I've seen to death, the only impression I get is, 'Oh, come to think of it, it was this kind of necklace...' Is it Tae-tae's face that's amazing, or is it my brain?
JUNG KOOK

While earrings are the most varied, Jungkook doesn't wear necklaces that often, so he gives a more understated impression among the maknae line. Since his face is so striking, it's as negligible as deciding whether or not to add pickled radish to curry. I said it.
From what I've seen, Jungkook wears the most long, dangling accessories, and they look great against his thick chest. He knows what sells...!

BTS and Earrings
There were too many earring patterns, so I've collected the dangling, swaying types that I like.
Namjoon almost exclusively wears small rings, so I get happy whenever I find him wearing other types!

Speaking of earrings, I always remember Jin choosing earrings with Hobi, and Jin modeling Jimin's merchandise earrings.
I wonder myself why I'm biased toward the eldest, but I'll post the video and my favorite article!
Oh, right. Speaking of earrings, I shouldn't forget this one either.

BTS and Flower Crowns
Setting aside whether or not they count as accessories, let's include flower crowns too!

At first, I suspected they were photoshopped, thinking, 'A pretty boy in a flower crown? This isn't a shoujo manga, haha,' but after seeing so much evidence, I realized they were real (*ノωノ)

Having them hold flowers and using the word 'fairy' so often—the K-pop idol world tends to lean toward a sparkly, fantasy aesthetic, which is extremely cute ( *´艸`)
I wrote in another article before that 'I've never seen so many people wearing flower crowns in my life. I feel like I've seen a lifetime's worth of flower crowns thanks to BTS,' but they really do wear them a lot. Especially at fan meetings. I think it's a wonderful culture!
Flower crowns are used as part of unique outfits and are also utilized as a means of expressing genderless styles.
Flower crowns have a cute and lovely image, which has the effect of enhancing an idol's visuals. By wearing flower crowns as part of fan service and creating a cute look, they also try to meet fan expectations.
There are various reasons why Korean male idols wear flower crowns, including fashion, gender expression, and fan service, and it can be said to be a part of Korean idol culture.
Expectations for the Future
After searching through various things this time, I discovered a fact I didn't need to know: I like chokers, corsets, body chains, and other tight, restrictive-feeling items (*ノωノ)
Chains...!!
I've seen body chains a few times now!
There was a god-tier tweet, so please let me post it here.
It looks seriously insane on a mannequin. I lost all my vocabulary from the shock, but it's powerful enough to be banned. I think I'd cough up blood if I saw it in person.

I don't think I've seen face chains on BTS yet, even though I see them occasionally in tweets from the K-POP idol side of things. Is it a recent trend?
I feel like V would be the first to try it, so I'm already looking forward to the possibility of seeing it someday. I can't wait...!
