A Book Crossing the Sea | "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society" [Movie]
Europe during World War II. Guernsey, an island in the English Channel. Nazi Germany landed on and occupied the island. This is a story depicting the lives and experiences of the people there.
After the war, Juliet, a writer in London, is led to Guernsey by a book she once gave away, where she discovers the secret of the "Potato Peel Pie Society."
In war,
When war breaks out, there are those who occupy and those who are occupied.
When such an absolute difference in standing arises, people tend to become cruel. Even in a world swallowed by such darkness, if one can find a single spark of humanity, perhaps things might become a little better.
The people pointing guns at each other also have loved ones and love someone, and those feelings are no different from my own. When one realizes that someone who seemed like a devil is actually human, perhaps they gain the strength to overcome adversity.
That was Elizabeth and the members of the Potato Peel Pie Society.
The catalyst might be something trivial. Spending a short time together in the same hospital. Accidentally helping a cow give birth.
From there, they overcome anger and conflict, continuing a quiet battle to protect the lives and important things right in front of them.
How did Juliet change after meeting them and uncovering their secret?
The "Downton Abbey" Family
Lily James, who plays the lead role of Juliet. In film, she has appeared in works such as "Cinderella" and "Yesterday."
And in television, she appeared as Rose in "Downton Abbey."
Jessica Brown Findlay, who plays Elizabeth, is Sybil in "Downton Abbey." Other "Downton Abbey" family members include Matthew Goode and Penelope Wilton.
The Lineage of the Nouveau Riche American
I had a sense of déjà vu regarding Mark, the fiancé who ends up being dumped by Juliet in this film. It was,
"The nouveau riche American dumped by a woman"
that is!
Yes, "Downton Abbey" is exactly that.
Perhaps "The Great Gatsby" is also a type of this.
It seems there is a template character of the "nouveau riche American man dumped by a woman" in this era.
This era refers to the 1920s through the 1940s. In other words, the era of the two World Wars.
In the two World Wars, Europe became the main battlefield and was exhausted both physically and mentally. On the other hand, the United States was not attacked on its mainland. There was the 1920s (the Roaring Twenties/Jazz Age), and although there was the Great Depression in 1929, the U.S. overcame the crisis through the subsequent New Deal and the wartime economy of World War II. Thus, the nouveau riche American was born.
From the European perspective, they have money, but they are a bit foolish and lack refinement. Such a character is likely perfect for symbolizing the era.
