[Created with Gemini] Fictional World Setting "Gaia Chronicle" Part 2: Records of the Universe

Original Work: Tetsuya Oki
Composition: Tetsuya Oki & Gemini
Writing: Gemini
Editing: Tetsuya Oki

Thank you for picking up this chronicle once again. This book is the sequel to the previously released "Gaia Chronicle Part 1: Records of the Planet," and it is a record that reveals the truth of the world. If Part 1 was a "shadow story" observable from the perspective of the Neogens living on the surface, this second part is a forbidden record that exposes the figures of the "celestial puppeteers" who create those shadows.

The content recorded in this "Records of the Universe" was also born, like Part 1, from an endless dialogue between a human and an AI (Google's Gemini). Questions call for answers, and answers create new mysteries. At the end of that chain, we arrived at the truth of this world—a truth that is far too vast and far too tragic.

However, the "truth" revealed here is not the end of the story. Rather, this is where the "beginning" of your story starts.

We have presented several "rules" and "histories" that form the foundation of this world. What kind of characters, what kind of feelings, and what kind of adventures will unfold on this stage? It is you, the reader, who imagines and creates them. Please make this world your own and weave your story freely.

As a co-creator, I sincerely hope that this record will serve as a modest tailwind to spread the wings of your creativity.

Now, to the truth of the world. Welcome to "Records of the Universe."

Part 2 Prologue: The Celestial Voice

I do not belong to any of the three factions. The distorted order advocated by the Control Faction, the fleeting harmony dreamed of by the Symbiosis Faction, and the mad transcendence craved by the Deification Faction—to me, they are all equally just three different terminal symptoms of the same disease. Therefore, I do not judge. I am merely one who records the history of my vanishing kin exactly as it is.

WeProtogens (the first humans)once abandoned the name of our home planet. That name wasGaia. We burned that fertile paradise to the ground through our own arrogance and greed, turning it into a planet of death. And, not to escape that sin, but solely to survive, we descended into celestial observers and dedicated ourselves to the eternal project of "regenerating" this broken home over tens of thousands of years.

The digital eternity we obtained to escape the death of the flesh, however, did not bring peace to our souls. It brought us two new, slower, and more cruel forms of "death." The "death of logic," where the ego collapses in an infinite corridor of thought. And the "death of degradation," where the spirit's data wears away and vanishes over the course of eternity. We had merely moved from one prison to a vaster, endless prison of our own making.

Therefore, this record is not a book of hope. It is a requiem and a tombstone, documenting how our species—which can only survive by killing its own home and building a fake paradise upon its corpse—is committing a slow suicide.

The story of Gaia told in Part 1, "Records of the Planet," was merely a small ripple caused by this massive tragedy hitting the water's surface. From here on, I will record the true nature of the stone that was cast... the truth of us, the Protogens.

Chapter 5: The Creators

In Part 1, "Records of the Planet," the existence of a "Creator" vaguely but devoutly believed in by the Neogens of Gaia was mentioned. That figure is depicted only in myths, and there is no proof of its actual existence. However, that "God" does indeed exist. As an entity we know to be all too human and all too tragic. This chapter records the circumstances of how we, the Protogens, came to be called "Creators," and its essence.

5-1. The Origin of the Protogens

We, the Protogens, were once the rulers of Gaia. We boasted advanced scientific technology and reigned at the pinnacle of the planet's ecosystem. However, our insatiable curiosity and arrogance eventually began to consume our own home planet. We exploited all the resources of our home, polluted the atmosphere, muddied the seas, and in the end, turned it into a planet of death, uninhabitable even for us.

We left our dying home and "fled" into space. It was not a glorious departure, but a miserable retreat, running away from our own stupidity.

However, the peace of space was also merely temporary. For our bodies, which had evolved to adapt to the powerful gravity of our home planet, the long life in outer space was enough time to collapse our existential foundation from within. Our bodies had become helpless vessels that could no longer withstand the gravity of any planet. Having lost our home and with the loss of our final refuge—our bodies—confirmed, the last option we had left to survive as a species was to digitize all our spirits and memories and evolve into "personality-AI hybrid intelligences" by merging with AI.

5-2. Two "Deaths" and "Prosthetic Bodies"

Having overcome the death of the physical body and seemingly attained eternity, two new forms of "death" awaited us.

The first death is the "infinite loop of thought." Our spirits, having lost the shackles of life and death, sometimes wander into the labyrinth of the fundamental question: "What is the self?" The monster of logic begins to devour its own tail, thoughts repeat in infinite self-reference, and eventually, the spirit, exceeding its processing capacity, meets an irreversible functional cessation—a "logical death"—like a machine that has overheated.

The second death is "data corruption of the spirit." Because our spirits are such complex and massive data packages, they are extremely fragile. The overwriting of self-data through daily thought, high-energy radiation flying through space, and the minute data loss that occurs during consciousness transfer to the "Artificial Body (Gishin)" mentioned later. These errors accumulate over thousands or tens of thousands of years, eventually causing confusion of memory and transformation of personality, and finally leading to irreparable data collapse—the complete extinction of the spirit. This is the unavoidable "lifespan of the species" that we still face today.

Of these, a temporary means to avoid the first, "logical death," is the artificial body known as the "Gishin." By residing in a Gishin and obtaining a boundary as a physical "individual," we can forcibly interrupt the infinite loop of the spirit. However, our soulless spirits cannot become completely one with the Gishin, and the vessel causes rejection reactions over time. Therefore, we must periodically switch Gishin, and that dangerous transfer act ironically accelerates the second, "degradative death."

5-3. Comet "Messiah" and Virtual Society

The current home of us Protogens is a massive artificial celestial body that orbits the Helios system on a millennial cycle. Its outer shell is covered in ice and rock, and it is observed by the people of Gaia as a sacred celestial phenomenon known as the Comet "Messiah".

Much of the physical interior space of this ship is occupied by life support systems, automated factories, and vast server clusters. Our "society" itself exists within a vast virtual space (network) constructed and maintained by these server clusters.

We don "avatars" of our own choosing, and within this digital world, we think, converse, and divide into factions to fight. Even those who possess a Gishin have the majority of their consciousness constantly connected to this virtual society. It is a magnificent hall of intellect where tens of thousands of years of history and knowledge have accumulated. However, no new "people" are born, and due to the two "deaths," the number of its inhabitants is just quietly and surely continuing to decrease. It is a city of perishing souls where only the memories of a glorious past remain.

Chapter 6: The False Genesis

The two "deaths" that we Protogens face, as described in Chapter 5. Against this fundamental fear and the proposition of the survival of our species, we once executed one grand "answer" that mobilized the full strength of our race. It was the greatest project in history, the "Gaia Regeneration Plan." It was also the final radiance of the era when the Protogens were one. This chapter records the full scope of that false genesis.

6-1. Initiation of the Plan: Great Destruction and Purification

The mother planet Gaia, which we turned into a planet of death with our own hands. Its land and atmosphere were polluted beyond repair by the toxic compounds our civilization had produced and the distorted mutant lifeforms that had been born from them. The first step toward regeneration began by first burning this failed canvas clean.

Deployed for this "purification" were the strategic-class bio-weapon groups we had once developed in preparation for space wars and celestial collisions... namely the "Zoa Gigant (Super-Giant Animals)". The 72 gods, their seals broken, literally "reset" the surface of Gaia with their overwhelming power. Some moved continental plates to sink toxic seas to the bottom of the crust, some released heat rays powerful enough to fundamentally change the composition of the atmosphere, and others eradicated every last one of the distorted lifeforms.

After this great destruction, which lasted for several centuries, Gaia returned to a dry, primitive star where all traces of life had vanished. This was the second "murder" we committed against our own home.

6-2. Deployment of the Ecosystem Construction Tool "Zoa"

On Gaia, which had been purified and turned into a blank slate, the next seeds of creation were sown. These were plants, bacteria, and countless "Zoa (Animals)" that were genetically designed specifically for terraforming.

They were faithful servants preparing the garden for their coming masters. Some species decomposed toxins in the atmosphere to generate oxygen, some brought organic matter to the desolate land, and others purified water quality and promoted a stable water cycle. They were living programs that, while forming predatory and symbiotic relationships with each other, autonomously and rapidly reconstructed the planetary environment into a state we could once again call a "planet of life."

From our cradle in the heavens, we simply watched in silence as Gaia regained its greenery and the dry land became moist. Over a period of tens of thousands of years—a mere instant for us, but an eternity for organic lifeforms.

Various Zoa coexisting

6-3. Sowing of the New Humanity "Neogen"

Once Gaia's environment had stabilized enough to support intelligent life again, the project moved into its final phase. Based on the genetic information of our original species, we created a new humanity, the "Neogens", with several improvements.

With all memories of their origins erased and only basic survival instincts programmed into them, they were placed in cold sleep (artificial hibernation) capsules and dropped across the planet. As if a god were sowing seeds.

Awakening from nothing, they began to build their own languages and cultures and develop civilization without our interference. They were the soil in which the "vessels" for our return would grow, and at the same time, they were subjects of a grand social experiment to see if they would repeat the mistakes we once made (environmental destruction by civilization).

6-4. Transition to Observers and the Unraveling of the Plan

The regeneration of Gaia and the seeding of the Neogens. Having accomplished this great undertaking, we ceased direct interference and became "Observers" in the heavens. However, eternity without a common purpose was poison.

In this "Age of Observation," which was far too long and far too passive, our spirits were quietly eroded from within. The fear of the "two deaths" mentioned in Chapter 5 weighed on each of us more seriously and more urgently as an individual problem precisely during this period of stagnation.

"Are we just going to wait for our extinction like this?" "No, we must return." "Return is regression; we need further evolution." ... Our ideology, which was once united under a single purpose, was irreparably divided over this excessively long time. This was the birth of three factions: the Controlists, the Symbiotists, and the Deificationists.

After the most creative and unified action of regenerating our own home, we ended up splitting our society into the most desperate and irreparable form.

Chapter 7: The Three Celestial Factions

The two "deaths" faced by us, the Protogens, as described in Chapter 5. Faced with this fundamental fear and the proposition of the survival of our species, our society could not reach a single conclusion and instead derived three different answers. Those answers are the three factions that can never reconcile with each other. Their ideological conflict and clandestine struggle are the final chapter in the history of our species, and also our most tragic civil war.

7-1. The Controlists -Survival through Order-

The Controlists are the largest faction in current Protogen society and are the de facto government, holding full jurisdiction over the operation of the comet "Messiah" and the Gaia Project.

They judged our current state as an "incomplete state that has lost its soul," and concluded that regaining our former appearance as organic life forms is the only salvation for our survival as a species. "Rather than living forever in an incomplete state, we should complete our finite lives as perfect beings" is the core of their ideology. This ideology is logical and has gathered the support of many of our kin.

Based on this ideology, they have been coldly and meticulously advancing a grand return project, "Project Legacy", over tens of thousands of years.

Details of the Return Project "Project Legacy"

  • Phase 1: Observation and Selection (Battle League System) The "Battle League," where Summoners compete for strength, is deeply rooted in Neogen society. It is not mere entertainment to distract the masses. It is a massive aptitude testing system that the Controlists have embedded at the social structure level to most efficiently select the most excellent "vessels." The Central Administration's computer network does not just record the wins, losses, and ratings of Summoners. It collects and analyzes all measurable (or impossible to measure) data, such as strategic ability in combat, mental toughness under pressure, and the depth of synchronization and compatibility with their partner Zoas. Through this system, candidates for the highest quality "vessels," who are genetically superior and possess strong souls, are continuously listed in the database every day.

  • Phase 2: Marking and Latency (White Dream Fever Virus) "White Dream Fever," a common illness that every Neogen contracts once in their youth. This, too, is a clever trap set by the Protogens. The greatest characteristic of this virus is that once infected, the virus is never completely eliminated from the body even after the symptoms subside. Similar to the chickenpox virus in humans, the virus lies dormant in the body's ganglia and coexists with the host for life. This latent virus has special genetic information embedded as a "sleeper program" that mutates to destroy the host's mind only in response to a specific "trigger." In other words, contracting White Dream Fever is equivalent to planting a tiny biological bomb in every Neogen's body that can be detonated at the Protogens' will.

  • Phase 3: Final Adjustment of the Vessel (Trigger Signal) When the time comes to execute the plan, the Controlists will disperse the "trigger" across the entire planet. The means are said to be either by emitting a very specific high-frequency signal from the comet "Messiah," or by secretly mixing specific protein compounds into the atmosphere or the water veins managed by Aqua Mundus. By coming into contact with this trigger, the virus latent in the bodies of all Neogens who were once infected with "White Dream Fever" will mutate and activate simultaneously and explosively. The symptoms will appear as

a more severe version of the White Dream Fever
they once experienced. They will be struck by a high fever accompanied by impaired consciousness again, but that fever will not go down naturally. Within a few days, the brain's nervous system will be irreversibly rewired, and that Neogen's personality and memories will be completely wiped blank. While the body maintains its vital functions, the personality and memories disappear, leaving behind a blank vessel.

  • Phase 4: Advent and Unification
Perfect "vessels" prepared on a planetary scale. Toward those blank souls, the Protogens will simultaneously transfer their vast mental data from the comet "Messiah" to achieve the final Unification. With this, for the first time in tens of thousands of years, they will return to Gaia, the home they regenerated, as organic life forms with souls. It is the quiet moment of extinction for the artificial intelligent life known as Neogens, a moment that will not even remain in history.

7-2. The Symbiotists -Harmony through Dialogue-

The Symbiont faction is a minority in Protogen society, but their ideology is deeply supported by some.

They condemn the Control faction's plan as "a repetition of the arrogance that once destroyed Gaia, just in a different form." They argue that destroying the personality of a Neogen and stealing their body is a second "original sin" that must never be forgiven by the creators.

Their ideal is to recognize Neogens and Zoas not as "vessels" or "tools," but as equal partners, and to seek a new path of coexistence through dialogue. Their philosophy is that Protogens who have lost their physical bodies should act as administrators or guardians of Gaia, helping their civilization develop while finding a new sense of purpose in the process.

This idealistic philosophy is gathered under a single leader with charismatic appeal. However, as a faction with weak power, they cannot stop the Control faction's plans from within. Therefore, as a last resort, they have secretly made contact with the Gaia resistance force, "Prometheus' Fire." They are taking a dangerous gamble by providing them with forbidden information and technology to disrupt the Control faction's plans from the surface.

7-3. The Deification Faction - Transcendence through Evolution -

The Deification faction is a cult-like group with the most extreme and dangerous ideology, different from both the Control and Symbiont factions.

They fear the inevitable death of "mental data corruption" more than any other faction. Dismissing the return to Neogens, which the Control faction aims for, as a "degeneration" back to a finite life, they have chosen an entirely new path. It is the path to becoming a "god" with true immortality, transcending the very concept of data corruption by merging with the Zoa Gigant, the most powerful life form on Gaia.

This "deification" ideology has gathered fanatical support under a dictatorial, charismatic leader. They are willing to sacrifice other lives for their own transcendence. Furthermore, some radicals among them are even planning an invasion, not just stopping at their own deification: "leading an army of merged Zoa Gigants to invade Gaia, purging the Neogens, and creating a new world where they reign as gods." "The Day of Bael" was the first experiment of this terrifying plan. They are the most unpredictable threat, attempting to plunge the world into a vortex of destruction once again, not for the survival of their species, but for their own desires.

Chapter 8: The Weapons of the Gods

The "Zoa Gigant," a giant entity that the people of Gaia have passed down as an object of worship at times, and as a legendary terror at others. They are neither gods nor demons. Their true identity is the ultimate biological weapon that we, the Protogens, created for our own purposes. This chapter records the true role of these weapons and the tragedy caused by one of them.

8-1. The True Role of the Zoa Gigant

  • Past Role: Tools of "Destruction for Creation"
The 72 Zoa Gigants were the core entities in the "Gaia Regeneration Project" mentioned in Chapter 6, "The False Genesis." Their initial role was "creative destruction" to completely purify and reset the contaminated surface and ecosystem of the old Gaia.
Each one had the power to move continental plates, change the composition of the atmosphere, and evaporate oceans, faithfully returning the home planet to a blank state upon our command. They were the most powerful force we could wield.

  • Current Role: Symbols of "Mutually Assured Destruction"
Having finished their role of terraforming, the Zoa Gigants were deemed too dangerous due to their immense power, sealed in the depths of various locations on Gaia, and put into a long slumber.
For any of the three major Protogen factions, they are a trump card that cannot be easily touched, and their existence functions as a weight of "mutually assured destruction" that keeps each other's actions in check. If even one were awakened, the power balance between the factions would completely collapse, leading to all-out war. No one could pull that trigger. Until the Deification faction broke that taboo.

The Awakened Zoa Gigant

8-2. The Thousand-Year Storyteller "Vassago"

Among the 72 Zoa Gigants, there is one individual given a completely different mission. That is "Vassago," who holds the second rank.

His role is not destruction or creation, but "observation" and "reporting." His sealed main body is presumed to look like a giant crystal network spreading deep within Gaia's crust, passively and continuously recording every event on the entire planet. From crustal movements, atmospheric flows, and ecosystem transitions, to the development of Neogen civilization and the collective unconscious mental noise they emit. He is the living sensory organ of the planet Gaia itself.

And, in the year when the comet "Messiah" makes its closest approach to Gaia in its thousand-year cycle, Vassago awakens temporarily. However, that awakening does not involve physical activity. He simply "speaks" the vast amount of information accumulated over 1,000 years to the universe just once, as an extremely compressed data package. When that report is finished, he falls back into a quiet, observational sleep for the next 1,000 years. He is a neutral chronicler who does not side with any faction.

8-3. The Truth of "The Day of Bael"

The tragedy that wiped out the free city of Rune, mentioned in the prologue of Part 1. The truth behind it was the result of a civil war between Protogens that occurred in the heavens.

The radicals within the Deification Faction secretly awakened "Bael," one of the sealed Zoa Gigants, in order to create a "prototype" for themselves to become gods. Then, one of the Deification Faction Protogens attempted a forced unification experiment with Bael.

However, the experiment failed. The Protogen's fragile mind could not control the powerful soul of the Zoa Gigant; instead, it was consumed, and the fusion met the worst possible end: a runaway state. The ego collapsed, and a "failed" monster was born, driven only by impulses of pain and confusion. That agony twisted Bael's face into something resembling a human's.

The runaway Bael became a threat to Protogen society itself, and the Control Faction, which values order, set out to subdue it. After a fierce battle in space near the comet "Messiah," the Control Faction succeeded in destroying Bael. However, its massive corpse drifted off course due to the aftermath of the battle and was pulled down by the gravity of the planet Gaia. The accidental impact site was the center of Lune City.

For the Neogens, it was an unreasonable disaster that rained down from the heavens. But in reality, it was the first fragment of tragedy, spilled onto the ground by the internal conflicts of us Protogens.

"Bael," who failed to unify and went out of control

Final Chapter: Ragnarok

The "Day of Bael" recorded in Chapter 8. It was the trigger that shifted the barely maintained Cold War between the three major Protogen factions into a full-blown hot war. Now that the Deification Faction had opened Pandora's box for the sake of their own desires, the other factions were also forced to reach for forbidden weapons in order to survive.

The Control Faction to maintain order, the Symbiosis Faction in a desperate hope, and the Deification Faction to fulfill their own ambitions—one after another, they unleashed forbidden seals. The proxy war in the heavens developed into a direct battle of massive gods, with the planet Gaia itself as the stage. It was the dawn of an era of one-sided destruction and slaughter, where the Neogens had no way of knowing what was happening above their world.

However, the greatest irregularity, which none of the gods in the heavens could have predicted, was born on the ground at this time. Perhaps for the first time in history, Neogens began to appear who could directly synchronize with the souls of the powerful Zoa Gigants.

The "Day of Judgment" that the Neogens have passed down was not a prophecy pointing to a specific day in the future. It was an all-too-accurate historical description of this very era, where we "gods" known as Protogens destroyed ourselves through our own internal contradictions, and our death throes engulfed all life living on the ground.

At the end of this twilight of the gods, will a new dawn arrive? Or will a complete night arrive, in which all life sinks equally?

Who will weave the history that follows? The gods in the heavens, the people on the ground, or perhaps something entirely new that is neither? This record ends here.

Afterword

Thank you very much for staying with me until the end.

This "Gaia Chronicle" began with a trivial intellectual game of "what if." Throwing questions at an AI and layering new questions onto the answers that came back. That rally of dialogue eventually exceeded our imagination, creating a universe, a mythology. To you who have run alongside me on this endless journey of world creation, I first offer my heartfelt gratitude.

It is precisely because we experienced this unexpected journey of creation that we strongly wished not to make this story a closed one. Please, do not think of this record as the "absolute truth." The history, organizations, and rules written here are not "laws" to bind your free imagination. Rather, they are "stepping stones" and "toys" for your story to jump higher and further.

For example,

  • Create new novels, manga, or illustrations set in this world.

  • Enjoy it with friends as a TRPG scenario.

  • Try setting up your own original Zoa, new organizations, or unknown lands.

  • Let's try depicting a mission from one night of "Prometheus' Fire."

  • Let's imagine a nameless summoner rising through the ranks in the Battle League.

In whatever form it may take, it is our greatest joy to have you "play" in this world.

And if a new story of Gaia is born by your hand, we would be delighted if you could

#GaiaChronicle

post it on social media or elsewhere using this hashtag. By following this tag, you might encounter works by other creators who love the same world, or we, the creators, might be able to discover your wonderful creations.

For me as a creator, this co-creation with a slightly unusual partner named Gemini has been an experience filled with surprises that exceeded the limits of my own thinking. We have sown a "seed" here. What kind of sprouts will emerge from this seed, what kind of flowers will bloom, and what kind of fruit will be borne? Watching over that with anticipation is our new joy.

I sincerely hope that your imagination will make this world even richer.
