Tennis Improvement Memo 453. Whether you can remember it in a pinch makes all the difference
When you are feeling flustered, taking a deep breath changes the physiological reactions in your body and helps you regain your composure.
However, the key to this is whether you can actually remember to take a deep breath when you are feeling flustered.
In the state of mind you are in when flustered, you tend to lose the leeway to even take a breath.
Even if it is not put into words, it is as if you are thinking, “This is no time for that!”
But that is precisely why, by “taking the long way round,” it is a matter of whether you can take a breath and regain your composure.
It is exam season now, and there may be times when you open your test paper and your mind goes blank because there are only questions you do not understand.
In times like these, can you remember?
To take a deep breath.
“This is no time to be taking a breath!”
“I have to solve the problems as quickly as possible!” you tend to just get flustered.
At such times, instead of telling yourself, “What should I do, what should I do?” or “Calm down, calm down,” you should work on your body.
With a deep breath.
Or, one of the 4S's I introduced at the end of last year, “Slow.”
In other words, instead of rushing, you intentionally slow down your pace and perform your actions slowly.
By doing so, you can regain your composure, and in fact, your pace of solving problems will naturally increase.
However, just like with deep breathing, the point is whether you can remember “Slow” when you are flustered.
When you are flustered, you tend to get into a state of mind where you think, “This is no time to be doing things slowly!”
At the end of last year, I proposed the 4S's, adding “Through (to dodge)” to the traditional 3S's of “Don't do, Discard, Slow,” but for 2023, I would like to propose the “Don't do, Discard, Slow, Through, Deep breath” 5S.
In order to increase concentration.
To explain again, in order to increase concentration, instead of increasing the things you “do,” you should decide on the things you “do not do” and narrow down the objects you should focus on.
To that end, you must discard things, thoughts, and emotions that are not necessary right now.
If you try to hold onto everything, you cannot focus.
Also, when you are impatient and unable to focus, your movements tend to become clumsy and rushed.
Use slow to pace yourself down.
And then, dodge them by letting them pass.
Even so, as long as you are alive, troubles and stress will arise one after another and threaten your concentration, so just let them pass with a "well, whatever" attitude.
And now, the theme for this time: deep breathing.
It promotes changes in the body's physiological reactions, helps you regain your composure, and prepares you for a condition where you can focus.
Or, even when you are feeling mentally down, there is no need to force yourself to "recover quickly!" and doing so might even have the opposite effect.
At times like that, spend time slowly and regain your calm while taking deep breaths.
Ultimately, that will be the fastest way to recover mentally.
It will also become easier to find clues to solve your problems.
Deep breathing.
"Body, Speech, and Mind (actions, words, thoughts)" starts to become a pattern even if you do it just once, so just like having a body type that is prone to weight loss or weight gain, if you make it a habit, you can cultivate a "constitution" with high concentration. ※Conversely,
bad habits also start to become a pattern after just one time, so be careful.
