Tennis Improvement Note 131. Improving Your Serve Through 'Reverse Engineering'
▶ It's not that you consult others after you feel better, but that you feel better because you consult others.
I have touched upon 'reverse engineering' before.
Do you remember?
To go over a few examples, entering a match after you've become good at tennis is not the way; rather, I have shared the process that seems counterintuitive to the general consensus, which is thatyou become good at tennis because you enter matches process.
Another example is the '
As If Principle'.
You don't laugh because you're happy; you become happy because you laugh.
You don't run because you're scared; you become scared because you run.
It's not that you consult others after you feel better, but that
you feel better because you consult others (so please feel free to consult me anytime → tenniszero.note@gmail.com).
Motivation also follows this rule: you do it first, and the motivation comes later, which is the
'only way in the world to generate motivation'.
To achieve this (without needing to consciously try to study),
starting with the small step of just opening your notebook to one page is enough.
Once you notice the words that catch your eye and start looking into them,
your motivation will surge and you won't be able to stop.
▶ When you are truly feeling down, 'the heart's natural healing power increases'
Now, regarding the serve,it's not that you can aim for the service box because you swing, but that because you have an image of aiming for the service box, the swing, which is the means to that end, manifests as reality.
Here, I explain that you don't go to Hawaii because you bought flip-flops, but that because you have an image of going to Hawaii, the necessary means, such as flip-flops, fall into place.
You don't experience loss because you are sad; you become sad because you experience loss.
And in the process of a shocked heart recovering its vitality, it's not about forcing yourself to act cheerful, but sometimes, depending on the person or situation, it is necessary to fully feel down and takerest to enhance the 'heart's natural healing power'.
▶ The body 'automatically performs' the necessary swing
Now, it's not that you enter the service box because you swing, but that because you have an image of aiming for the service box, the swing, which is the means, appears.
The two are 'similar but different'.
In other words, they are 'completely different things'.
This is becausewhen you consciously try to swing, you cannot focus on the ball, so the percentage of serves that go in decreases.
On the other hand, if you have an underlying image of aiming for the service box,all you have to do is focus on the ball without thinking about anything else, and your body will automatically perform the necessary swing.
Therefore,it is important to 'trust your body and leave it to itself'.
▶ Do you 'consciously try to walk' to the station?
For example, you don't reach the station just because you try to walk from your house, right?
Because you have an underlying image of the route from your house to the station, your body automatically starts walking.
In that process, for example, if it looks like you won't make it on time, your body will jog based on conditions like the remaining distance and time, andyour body will automatically adjust its movement according to the image.
▶ You can't time it right because you 'consciously think' about the swing
However, many tennis players who are struggling are, to use an analogy, consciously trying to walk.
Of course, for commuting, if you have the image, you will reach the station, butin the case of tennis, precision is required to match the hitting timing within a fraction of a second.
For that reason, you focus on the ball. However, if you are conscious of the swing, your hitting timing will be off, so even if people say 'images manifest into reality,'
the reality you imagined won't happen.
If you are off by 0.1 seconds, you will hit off-center, and if you are off by 1 second, you will swing and miss.
▶ Fix the 'misalignment' and overcome your plateau!
The troublesome part is that many tennis players who have hit a plateau are already programmed to be conscious of things like "swinging properly," "hitting well," and "aiming for the service box."
They are mistakenly "imagining" that "this is what is necessary!"
Therefore, if you correct that "misalignment," you can overcome your plateau.
At Tennis Zero, we provide hints, ideas, and suggestions for that purpose, using various approaches.
Even so, whether it's the "Law of Reversed Effort," "inversion," or the "Nightingale's Teachings," common sense is surprisingly "always the opposite".
▶ Because you wish to "become happy"...
Once again, serves improve through "reverse engineering."
In other words, it is not that you can aim for the service box because you swing the serve, but rather because you have an image (purpose) of aiming for the service box, your body automatically performs the swing (means) to get the serve in.
When you do that, "images become reality" truly happens.
People say that no matter how much you consciously wish to "become happy," you "can only live according to your potential self-image."
And the reason you wish to become happy is because your current self has a "self-image of unhappiness".
That, too, is surely the result as they say, "images become reality".
